Go to a store. Play with both. See which one feels better to you.

Sign up for accounts with iTunes and the Zune Marketplace. Play with them both. See which one is easier to use, and which one has more of the music you like.

Ipod. I loathe apple, but seriously Ipods are one of the greatest things ever made. They seem to work a lot better and much more effortlessly than the zune which just feels like a giant headache.

They’re both way too expensive for what they offer. Just buy a cheap mp3 player.

I bought an 8gb Ipod Touch a few months ago and LOVE IT!!! It’s awesome, there is a never ending list of things to do on it. One of the greatest things about it is the internet which you can use anywhere that has WiFi. I do not have one bad thing to say about it.

iPod is a superior product. Knock offs invariably leave the buyer comparing their purchase to the iPod.

I like Ipods personally. Most of my friends have iPods and love them. The one who has both uses the iPod far More. Also I like iTunes setup way more the the zune marketplace. For 8gb on an iPod you can go nano or touch… Personally i’d go with the nano, it’s smaller and more
Colorful(i like color), and the itouch only get wifi which Is hard to find free around town, and though apps are cool there not worth an extra $100.

iPod touch, it’s not just an MP3 player, there is some genuinely good games on it, like metal gear touch and the quest

iPod. I seem to recall reading Microsoft are going to stop producing Zunes and closing Zune store.

iPod to fit your track needs. IE you want a few thousand tracks get a nano you want more get a classic. Ignore everyone who says they are overpriced. They are worth every penny.

Previously had an iPod touch now got an iPhone both wonderful.

Anything but a Zune.

If you get a chance to put your hands on various models and try ‘em before buying, I think you’ll find the iPod lineup to compete well (possibly explaining the iPod dominance in market share).

BTW, I think Zune’s music marketplace still employs DRM for their music. Almost all of the music available via Apple’s iTunes is now DRM-free.

Oh… and that’s the second part of the equation. Try out the iTunes software (it’s free). It’s your computer’s interface to managing your music, videos, pictures, whatever on the iPod… and the competitors’ offerings are sad, kludgy by comparison. Seriously, I used to have a Sony MP3 and their equivalent of iTunes was so poor, I had to recheck the label to see it was from Sony. I couldn’t believe it.

@robmandu I think that you can download 10 mp3’s a month from Zune marketplace as part of one of the subscription plans.

edit

I’d still recommend getting an ipod though

Also, while Sony Connect and ATRAC was pretty bad (read the most dire thing ever in the entire history of everything, ever) the battery life on Sony’s players was always fantastic.

Subscription plan == DRM.

Also, subscription plans are practically a failed business model. But there are some people into that kind of thing. If a subscription is what you require, the iPod is not for you.

Lightlyseared's avatar

@robmandu yup i know the subscription plan means DRM but on top of the subscription plan you get 10 MP3’s (which don’t have DRM)

oohhh… you did say MP3. I gotcha.

How about some more information? Are you just interested in Music? At what rate does your library grow? 1GB per month etc? Are you perhaps interested in extra features?

iPod Touch is great if you want music, and a PDA like device

iPod Nano…I do not really recommend that for you

iPod Classic…I have this one, its great if you want all your media in your pocket, its like a portable entertainment center, I have ~35ish movies, 1000+ songs, and tons of podcasts and misc TV shows and music videos, and my 80GB still has 34GBish left to go

As for Zune, I do not know much about, but I know, going with the iPod is not a bad choice and you will not regret it.

I already have an Iphone, but would like a dedicated music player. I don’t want to overload my Iphone and make it sluggish. I’m not interested in a subscription plan.

Thanks for all of your input everyone. I just bought an Ipod Nano off of ebay for 83 [it’s used and has minor wear on it]

bluedoggiant's avatar

Ahh good luck with it, which one is it by any chance?

Pcrecords's avatar

Never had a ‘sluggish’ response from my iPhone when it’s full. Or my iPod, or shuffle for that matter.

robmandu's avatar

@Pcrecords, agreed… also found that statement a bit odd.

So do you guys all remember when I told you I got the 8 gb red Ipod. Well, I got it on Ebay and on the listing it said that it would ship with UPS and had a Insurance protection plan up to 100$ for loss/damaged items. So the guy never emailed me the confirmation # and decided to ship it with another mailing company instead of UPS, he shipped with Fed Ex. Unfortunately the guy didn’t even pay for the signature option and since he never emailed me the confirmation # I wasn’t able to keep track of the package. The Fed Ex-ers left the package at my front door on 2:10 pm and left. The Ipod got stolen and I’m left with nothing. What makes me angry is that Fed Ex didn’t even ring the doorbell and my brother and dad were home all day.

Pcrecords's avatar

that is so sad… poor you. is there any way you can get a refund through ebay or paypal because the seller didn’t ship as stated, you should start a complaints procedure, firstly by contacting the seller.

i hope you get a cool iPod soon
