How do URL-shortening companies make money?

Asked by upholstry (683points) April 15th, 2009

How do companies like tinyurl.com or socuteurl.com make money? Everything is free and there aren’t any ads on some of them.

They take the extra letters and sell them for a profit at the text bazaar…It’s complicated

@SeventhSense funny.

So I’m guessing the answer is, “they don’t”

No, there’s a significant aftermarket for used characters. Some consider it a black market. I would say that’s a good assessment. At least they are not in the red….of course that’s the domain of the editing pre-owned letter market.

The ones I’ve seen all have advertising on them, except the ones that charge for their service.
