Nasal Spray addiction. What should I do?

Asked by rawpixels (2668points) April 17th, 2009

It seems my nose is totally clogged constantly and the only thing that clears it up is nasal spray. I don’t want to become dependent on it, so what are my alternatives?

A visit to an Ear, Nose, & Throat (ENT) Specialist might be a good idea or just a visit to your regular doctor would probably work well too.

Personally, I think your regular doctor would be better for this question because he/she knows more about you and medicine in general.

off the top of my head though, constantly eat spicy foods?

The thing is, I don’t have medical coverage right now.

I like spicy foods, but don’t eat it constantly

Just stop using it for a few days and the congestion should go away. I had the same problem and used nasal spray for years. Your body has to go thru withdrawals just like any other drug. Patience and good luck.

Some side effects from using nasal spray are sneezing, increased nasal discharge and drying of the nostrils. I’m not a doctor but I would think the best place for you to start is to figure out if your nose is “stuffy” or dry. Perhaps you could use a simple OTC saline spray to see if the add’l moisture could relieve some of your symptoms. Good luck.
