If you're a fan, what are your favorite science fiction series?

Asked by mattbrowne (31732points) April 17th, 2009

Here are a couple of examples:

* Battlestar Galactica
* Firefly
* Star Trek
* Quantum Leap
* Stargate (SG1, Atlantis)
* Futurama
* Babylon 5

Do you know any less well-known series that you really liked and feel that more people should see it?

Firefly and BSG. Love them or GTFO!

I like several of the ones you mentioned. I liked Sliders better than Quantum Leap, though. And there was one in the late 80s called Alien Nation that had some interesting ideas from more of a sociological point of view rather than a technical one. Battlestar Galactica did some of that nicely, too. For comedy, I had fun watching Red Dwarf more than once. (Ya gotta love the cat. :^> ) Others I’ve liked include Blake’s 7, Dr. Who, and Torchwood.

Cheers!

When I was a kid, I was a big Space 1999 fan. I’ve been a Whovian since 1978, but I’m not into Torchwood. I also enjoyed Auntie Beeb’s version of The Hitchhiker’s Guide, though the production values were pretty bad. Neverwhere was also a fun short series, but that’s more fantasy than sci-fi. Red Dwarf was great until the last series and then you could tell no one was having fun anymore.

Oh.

And V.

V the Miniseries was so awesome. Every kid at school talked about the alien leader Diana unhinging her jaw and eating that rat for days after that aired. I understand a remake is in the works.

Aaaaah. I remember V. I agree about the end of Red Dwarf. I’ve never heard of Space 1999 or Neverwhere.

Space: Above and Beyond was nice too.

Special Unit 2, The Chronicle, Sliders (lurve to you @cyndyh), Threshold, Surface, Invisible Man (the new one), Seven Days, Cleopatra 2525 and a myriad of others that I can’t quite remember.

(These are just the less well known ones, I too am a Trekker, a Whovian, and a fan of many other more mainstream ones.)

@KatawaGrey – I just had to look this up: “Doctor Who fans are sometimes referred to as Whovians, most often by the press.” Again, I learned something. Fluther is great!

I like Firefly and Futurama.

As a kid I loved the Gerry Anderson shows, especially the live action UFO. BBC have been repeating it recently an I still thought it was great. Straker was so cool.

I could not get into Battlestar Galactica (old or new). I agree about the Red Dwarf comments above, they’ve recently done a new 3 episode special over Easter but it was not the same as the early series.

I’ve been a Dr Who fan since the John Pertwee days. Star Trek has always been a favourite. And Blakes 7.

@lercio – Tom Baker’s “my” Doctor (and also of most US Whovians between 30 and 50, I’d reckon), but I’ve seen the Pertwee-era shows. Very Go Go Doctor Gadget!

@KatawaGrey : Wow, that’s a lot I haven’t heard of before. I feel some searching coming in my future. Thanks!

@aprilsimnel: I actually made a really long Tom Baker style scarf for myself. :^> I really like David Tennet, though. I’m interested in what the soon-to-be doctor will be like, too.

Futurama and SG-1. Not Atlantis.

Thanks for sharing your insights. I will try some new series that have been mentioned.

I read Dr. Who and I liked it.

lercio's avatar

@aprilsimnel Yes, Tom Baker was probably my Doctor as well, but I used to really like the UNIT plot lines. Jon Pertwee was great and very much in vogue for the early ‘70s. But he did commit the ultimate sin in becoming Worzel Gummigde after he left the series.

aprilsimnel's avatar

Oy, Worzel Gummidge. I was going to leave that be…

Whoops.… I forgot “My Favorite Martian”...
