Is a canker sore necessarily a symptom of herpes?

Does a canker sore in the mouth always indicate herpes, or can it be non-STD related?

No it isn’t. But you must see a doctor…quickly. Don’t spread it if you do have it. It isn’t the end of the world…but it is grossly unfair to give it to others…even if someone might have done that to you. You need to know. Only a doctor can tell you.

No, I used to have them a lot when I was little. I think it was Rembramdt company toothpaste that made a paste to get rid of canker sores, and it worked marvelously.

Are you a teen-ager? Canker sores of the more benign variety more common then. I used to get them also; usually noticed when I drank oj and the acid stung at the site of sore.

sjg’s site very informative (in spite of gross close-up and enlarged photos of c/s.)

COLD sores are a sign of herpes, CANKER sores are sort of mysterious… no-one knows exactly what causes them. I usually get them when I eat too much acidic food (when Rio Star grapefruits go on sale I usually buy a big bag and I always get a canker sore afterwards).

According to the NIH: Canker sores can be triggered by emotional stress, dietary deficiencies (especially iron, folic acid, or Vitamin B-12), menstrual periods, hormonal changes, food allergies, and similar situations. They occur most commonly with viral infections. In some cases, the cause can not be identified.

They are not caused by herpes.

@christy; I always thought, until now, that cold sores and canker sores were the same. Thanks for setting me straight.

If you’re in pain, I’ve used a type of patch that worked very well. It also sped up the healing dramatically. You can find them at any drug store.

Stress certainly correlated with my canker sore.

oh yeah i read it wrong. cold sore yes. canker no.

It can be. There are two types of herpes HSV-1 mouth sores and HSV-2 genital sores. A canker sore could be HSV-1 or it could be something else but over 80% of the population has HSV-1 so it often is. More information here
