Have you ever been betrayed by a family member, extended family or not?

Asked by lisaj89 (720points) August 3rd, 2009

My father cheated on my mother MANY times during their twenty year marriage. This, the whole family knew. My father’s sister was on my mom’s side during the divorce and offered support emotionally as well as financially. Now, five years later, and a year of failing to pay court ordered child support and alimony, my father has decided to take my mother to court to try to get out of paying alimony. The catch is, my uncle (father’s sister’s husband who is obviously a lawyer) has decided to represent my father!
Has anyone been in this type of situation? If so, how did you deal with it?

Unknown to me, my brother put his name on my mother’s bank accounts before she died (Dad was already dead) rendering all the money HIS when she passed and not inheritable. Relatives on my mother’s side treat him like nothing happened. I don’t talk to him nor them. It’s over 20 years so far. It WILL be forever. In fact, they could drop dead.

Many years ago, I confided in a close cousin that I grew up with that I had smoked marijuana a couple of times in college (he happens to be a major pothead to this day). Years later, he told my uncle about it, who passed it on to my mother. There is a huge stigma in my family about smoking marijuana (perhaps because so many of the men in the family do it), so my mother was very upset and I was pretty mad for a while.

A worse betrayal was from my father. At a time when I was supporting the entire family, I was forced to quit my job. I asked him for support, which he agreed to do. Right after I quit, a man who spoke to me at least once every day just disappeared for a couple of months. That was 3.5 years ago and I haven’t spoken to him since, though he has tried to contact me numerous times.
