Rock Band vs. Guitar Hero?

Asked by marauder76 (390points) August 7th, 2009

I want to buy one of these games, primarily to play with my wife at home. It seems like there are so many different versions that I don’t know where to start. Which game and which version is best suited for two players? Which is the better overall game? Do they come with the instrument(s), or do I have to buy them seperately, and if so, which is the best value? I’m talking about the xbox 360 version here, if it matters. Any input is very much appreciated.

well, i have rock band and i like it quite well.

Sept 9 they’re releasing Beatles Rock Band, which includes replicas of the Beatles instruments and spans their career as a band, from the earlier stuff right up til the end.

Supposedly, according to rockband.com, the instruments from the regular Rock Band 2 will be supported by the new game. So you could either get regular rock band, and buy just the disc for the beatles game later, or wait and get the whole deal.

Rock band has better songs . . . that’s the only real difference to me. Besides graphics, and all that.

Rock Band.

Being quite the video game nerd and music geek, I’ve had my fair share with both games and I have to say that I would choose Rock Band hands down. To me, it has a better overall feel. And like eponymoushipster said Beatles Rock Band is coming out and it’s looking really nice.

Haven’t played rock band but I know they have a better selection of songs.

Rock Band and Guitar Hero World Tour are the same in that both involve all the instruments (guitars, drums, vocals). I like Rock Band, but I’d probably go with GH world tour if I were you. The drums are better (they have cymbals), and I like the music selection. Rock Band has good songs, too, but I think it’s not as well-designed. It’s tougher to do hammer-ons the way they set it up. Guitar Hero has a better structure. If that makes sense.

Whichever one you choose, you won’t be terribly disadvantaged. They’re both great.

I have both, but I actually prefer Guitar Hero.

I have Rock Band, better than Guitar Hero…IMO. It does have better songs than GH by the way…
Looking foward to the Beatles version!!

I prefer Rock Band, but it’s totally a personal preference. Just check the song list for each game and see which one you like better.

I’d like to throw my vote in for Rock Band. I’ve only played with rock band 1 and 2 instruments, but I have rented many Guitar Heros (World Tour, Metalica, Smash Hits) and Rock Band beats them all hands down, IMO. May I suggest the Rock Band 2 complete kit from Amazon which is only $99 right now (includes game/mic/guitar/drums). The drums are significantly improved from the original set. As others have said, this also gets you all the instruments so you can buy Rock Band: Beatles next month if you want. I’d also add if you can rent or somehow get a copy of of the Rock Band 1 disc, you can pay $5 and “transfer” the songs to your 360 hard drive. That gives you 150+ songs with a huge selection of downloadable songs (600+ with new songs each week).

Edit: I mainly play the drums and most of my friends agree that Rock Band is better, however I do have a friend who primarily plays guitar and thinks that Guitar Hero has a better selection of songs for guitar players.

I only own the RB2 Wii version, but the gameplay is still the same across all the platforms. And there ARE some integral differences in ACTUAL gameplay mechanics across GHWT and RB2. Namely, in GHWT, everyone shares Star Power, and must activate it individually to get the full multiplier going, and the drums/vocals can activate Star Power whenever they want. However, RB2 gives everyone their OWN Overdrive bar (same thing as Star Power) which can be activated to create a multiplier, but the opportunity isn’t wasted if everyone doesn’t activate. At the same time, Drums and Vocals must wait for specified cues to activate their Overdrive…

Songs… * shrug * Honestly, I like the songs from both games, and I believe that the games have been patched to accept both sets of instruments. I could be wrong… Anyway, get whatever version’s full instrument pack (You WILL need to get a 2nd guitar separately for both versions, though GHWT does offer a 2 guitar pack, but then you need to buy a USB mic and drums separately…) But whichever version you get, they’re both excellent experiences. Wikipedia has song lists for the songs on the disks AND downloadable content. Let that be your guide as to which game you want if it matters to you.

Rock Band I think is the easier game to play.

I have had guitar hero games for many years now, and loved playing. I thought it was one of the greatest games ever, but since recently playing rock band I prefer that much better. Rock band has much greater songs in my opinion and variety of instruments, which I found more entertaining.
