What are your thoughts about the statement that - The starting point for World Peace is 'Forgiveness'?

Asked by lloydbird (8740points) August 8th, 2009

Its got to start somewhere. So why not with this idea/notion.
Do you know of another likely starting point?
Do you still think that it’s pointless?
Or do you think that there is a point here?

That or the total annihilation of the human species.
But it still would not be enough. A lot of violence and war is not based on hatred of one another, but on poverty and greed. That too has to go before there can be world peace.

Well, in places in the world where conflict has gone on for generations (Serbia, Croatia, Bpsnia, Albania) (Ireland, Britain) (Israel, Palestine) etc., there has to be a wiping out of past grudges in order for people to commit to only looking forward in peace.

So, I think it is a good idea, but a very difficult one.

Forgiveness is a very strong concept. Another strong approach is to practice liking people in spite of how different they are and set aside what we may not agree on.

I would chance Forgiveness for “Empathy”... not because forgiveness is mistaken, but because empathy involves understanding. If we’re able to understand the cause of each others actions and take others in consideretion, not only we could achieve forgiveness but also reach peace.
We say we live in a hyper-connected world, but we, as human beings, are not connected at all, we keep thinking in ourselves first, we have to change that in order to evolve.
