Why am I waking up so early now?

Asked by mizkendall3939 (151points) August 13th, 2009

So in the beggining of the summer i went to bed at like 11 and woke up at about 12–12:30. Almost every single night. then i went to Michigan for a month and did about the same thing. got 12 to 13 hours of sleep each night. So I’m back and ever since i’ve been back i’ve been sleeping at like 11 and waking up at like 8:30!!! and I can’t go back to sleep!! i need more sleep but whenever i wake up i cant go back to sleep. What’s going on?

Time zone.?

Most people are grateful and content with 8–9 hrs. !3 seems truly excessive and the 10.5 that you are complaining about is also too much. You might want to discuss this with a medical person.

yes, i have been told that i sleep to much. but without that much i just feel really tired.

As I said, there may be a medical issue. Most of the world likes to be awake for a longer time each day than 11 hours. Chronic fatigue can have many causes, most of which can be addressed by a PA.

If you sleep more than 12 hours you wake up more tired than when you went to sleep. [citation needed] Now that you’re getting up earlier, you have a longer day to work with. Do something productive.

You’re probably pregnant.

12 to 13 hours of sleep is much too much on a daily basis. Your body is telling you that you have had enough (which is why you are waking earlier).

There are a number of possibilities and only your physician can diagnose your situation. It could narcolepsy, sleep apnea, depression, low serotonin levels, or something else.

Get thee to the doctor!

Has your diet changed?

mizkendall3939's avatar

no my diet has not changed. I’m not pregnant. and that does make sense.

You are very young to need that much sleep. I would strongly suggest talking to your family doctor.

@mizkendall3939 How old are you? You might have been going through a growth spurt or a natural adjustment in hormones if you are under 22.

I would definitely get your thyroid checked if you spend weeks on end sleeping 12 hours a day. Are you losing a lot of hair, do your eyes feel dry, if you look in the mirror and swallow can you see a lump in your neck move (not your adams apple if you are a man, that is different).?

I second all the doctor suggestions. You’re too young to be sleeping that many hours.

im 14. im fine. im not losing hair. my eyes arent dry. and i cant see a lump in my neck move. i think im fine, i know a lot of ppl who sleep that much?! i didnt know it was so rare. most of my friends get that ammount of sleep.

I would try to wean myself off of so much sleep. When school starts, you’re going to have to get up & go.

According to this article you are pretty close to normal for your age group. Unless you have other symptoms or cause for concern, I’d say it’s not much to worry about. You’re a teen, it’s summer, and you like to stay up late and sleep in. Sounds pretty normal to me! I remember doing the same at your age.

Oh, 14. I wouldn’t worry much. Your body is going through so many changes you need sleep. I slept until 1:00 in the afternoon all of the time as a young teenager. Mostly I needed around 9 or 10 hours, but if I only slept 7 hours a few nights in a row, the next few nights (hell naps during the say also) were spent catching up.
