How do you de-stress?

Asked by Emily (51points) January 15th, 2008

And don’t tell me yoga. I live in San Francisco. (not that there’s anything wrong with yoga, I’m just looking for OTHER ideas)

I have a couple of suggestions…
1. Play Free falling and sing really loud
2. Now I read about this in the paper – they actually suggest that you read something out loud. There is something about the way our minds work that stopping and reading something – not just talking your way through it in your mind, changes something and helps.
3.And this is a little embarrassing – and only for times by your self at home – I recommend trying a tantrum. Yup take your cue from a 3 year old – Lay down on the floor – stomp your feet, and hands and yell – it’s so ridiculous you will be laughing within 10 seconds.

Exercise of any sort is a huge de-stressor for me. I usually like to run, but lifting weights is good too.

Sailing and surfing are probably the best, but I don’t get to do them as often as I’d like.

Mellow music, unstructured time, classic cocktails.

Realizing that no matter what happens, you’ll make it through. Thinking positively and optimistically about life is a huge indicator of low levels of stress in many studies. Make a plan for how to deal with what stresses you then plan a reward for yourself for following through.

Do something good for someone else… that always freshens up my feelings of fulfillment regardless of my stress level.

A nap and knowing “I’ve done it with less”, aka refound confidence though inner perspective.

A green tea or a hot shower, even petting my cat for 20 mins.

Music! Coversation with trusted friends. Martinis. Reading to my daughter. Reading anything, really. Fixing something broken.

I go for a walk. Getting out and taking a walk – even if it’s only 10 or 15 minutes – lets you get away from whatever’s stressing you out for a little while. It’s also a good time to let your mind wander, which helps you process things that might be bothering you.
