Does anybody know of a computer I can get?(see details)

Asked by mbubbles (166points) August 19th, 2009

OK, I’m fifteen and I still don’t have a computer. Im saving up for one, but I need some suggestions on what to buy. Im looking for a PC that has a fast responder or whatever. I need it to be able to access the internet and have the Microsoft office package. Something that allows me to edit photos would be nice, but not necessary. Also, if I have a printer that works with apple, can I use it for my PC? I’ve also heard of Netbooks. Would they be good for what I’m looking for?

First of all, do you want your computer to be portable? Do you need to carry it around, for example in a train or in class or at the airport? If so, then get a laptop. Netbooks are small laptops that are good for Internet browsing, but not good for video editing, because their screens are very small. As well, they do not have powerful CPUs, GPUs, and RAM. However, they are relatively cheap. If you want to edit photos and you want something portable, get a laptop.
If you don’t want something portable, get a desktop. A desktop will be more powerful than a laptop. I recommend that you get a computer with at least 2 GB of RAM. It would be ideal for you to get one with an Intel CPU and an nVidia GPU because those companies are preferable, but I don’t know what your budget is.
Some companies you can buy computers from are Acer, Gateway, Dell, and HP.
A printer that works with Macs will probably work with PCs.
And to clarify the terminology I used: A CPU is the main part of the computer, like the brain of the computer. CPU stands for Central Processing Unit. A GPU is a processor for graphics (you’ll need a good one if you want to play video games), and RAM stands for Random Access Memory. More RAM will ensure that your computer is faster and that you can perform more tasks at the same time. A better CPU will make your computer faster.
Oh and as for Microsoft Office, you can order/buy it as well but it will cost you one hundred dollars or so. As an alternative to this you can use free programs like OpenOffice.org

Well, I wouldn’t suggest a Netbook as your only computer. Netbooks are cool for taking notes in class, or browsing the net between classes. But they don’t have any real capacity to do anything impressive. You won’t be playing any games on it. You won’t be able to hold much for a music/movie collection on it.

Laptops are a step up. A bit more bulky, but typically better if you want to do some minor gaming, and typically have larger harddrives to store your music.

Desktops aren’t very portable at all. But if you were looking for the best performance for the least money, they’re your best bet.

It all depends on what you need. I don’t have a very “on the go” lifestyle, so my desktop works quite well for me.

Another note is, computers aren’t exactly like video game consoles. It’s not like there are only 3 choices out there. The way you worded your question, it almost makes me think that’s what you believe. There are an infinite number of combination for all of the parts.

No personal computer made within the past 10 years has been made without internet access, Office packages or photo editing in mind. Of course, if you want wireless internet connection, you might have to go out and buy a $20 accessory to do that.
Your printer that works with a mac should almost definitely work with Windows. You may have to download a driver for it, but if there’s a will, there’s a way.

To simplify the process, once you decide on Notebook vs. Desktop vs. Netbook, I’d suggest just going to Dell’s website (or some other company) and choosing parts there and having them just send you a computer.

If you don’t need the Microsoft logo, I’d suggest Open Office. It does everything MS Office does, and it’s free, not to mention platform-independent.

I saw a netbook over at eTech the other day selling for less than $200. Their servers are down right now, or I’d give you a link.

Another option is eBay. You should be able to pick up a 5 or 6 year old laptop for next to nothing.

what do you think is the best company to get a laptop from? I’m thinking about choosing parts on their websites, but I don’t know which website to choose.

@mbubbles , consider Lenovo, Dell, and Asus, in that order. Avoid Gateway, Compaq, and Sony (ok computers but obscenely overpriced).
