What is a meme or me me ?

Asked by muizus (5points) August 26th, 2009

I was trying to find out where the expression “Jesus Christ! It’s a lion!Get in the car!” comes from. I first encountered it when purchasing a fridge magnet showing a cat in a car. The picture had me laughing for days. Looking it up in Google I have now found the tragic background (a tourist eaten by a lion). Several sources called the expression (Jesus Christ!) a meme. I now know how to pronounce it, but what does it mean ?

From Merriam Webster

” an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture”

A meme (pronounced /ˈmiːm/, rhyming with “cream”) is a postulated unit or element of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, and is transmitted from one mind to another through speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena. (The etymology of the term relates to the Greek word mimema for “something imitated”.)

thank you, my Webster is 20 years old, a good night to you from Belgium – days are fast getting shorter and it’s now dark and cool.

Memes. They’re like cultural viruses. Spreading, spreading, and then everyone gets sick of them because by the time your grandmother sends you an email with “At first I was all like… (picture of angry face) ...but then I LOL’ed (picture of happy face)”, then that joke isn’t funny anymore, just like Morrissey said.

Belgium, huh? I should move there. NYC is icky and hot.

And some people think that that scene was staged.
