The Great California Garage Sale

I’m not that fussed if you don’t live in Cali, chip in with your views anyway.

Buying cars there sounds potentially shady.

I hadn’t actually heard of this before.
But California definitely is in a bit of a dire situation, financially. Whatever works, I guess.
I guess it’s easier to host a garage sale than, say, let the non-violent drug offenders out of prison to stop wasting $36,000 per year on each of them

I’m curious if this idea was spawned via our radical new suggestion system.

There are two huge sources of (potential) tax revenue in California: silicon valley (computers, software, electronics), and Hollywood (movies, music, games).

Electronics sales are down, and some companies are leaving the state.

Movie studios know how to control their accounting so no one can tell if they are making a profit or not.

I guess we will have to keep selling the filing cabinets out of the state office buildings to cover the $40 Billion deficit. When the state representatives arrive at the capitol in Sacramento, they all get out of the same clown car.

@PerryDolia this is what I was thinking, surely Cali should be in great financial straits, it has what everyone in the world wants (technology and entertainment) what have they been spending the money on? Has the state succumbed to the celebrity personality it hosts? Does it believe that every light bulb costs $800 and hammer $1,500.

Or does every citizen of California live a dream life style? Is the OC true? (I know it isn’t)

Where is all the money going? Does California have no taxes?

I think we just throw all the tax money into the ocean. Isn’t that what every coastal state/nation does?

I don’t know about most of California, but I know San Diego and the rest of SoCal has major issues because we have such a huge boom of people moving here. There is always construction going on, on main streets and highways, to accomodate for all of the people.
Our colleges are just filled with examples like this: A 1,200-car parking garage was constructed for Mira Costa Community College. MCCC got 3,000 new students this semester (and unlike you wonderful Europeans, us filthy Americans have a shitty public transportation system, and hate to carpool).

I’m sure somebody else on Fluther knows way more about California’s economy than I.

There are a lot of reasons for Ca financial mess. Other states are facing the same problems. During the previous administration, the Feds passed a lot of their debt down to the states by underfunding
Legislated allocations. To compound the problem, the Feds put into place mandates with no funding. The states carried the burden for as long as possible. Since CA economy base is much larger than most states, it has been the forerunner in the financial mess. Other states are close behind.
The agriculture industry is huge in CA. The central valley produces most of the fruits and veggies served up on flutherite’s plates.

I think it’s pretty exciting. I just wish I could take advantage of some of the great bargains they have. The Federal Government has been doing this sort of thing for years, but they don’t make a huge public spectical of it, you have to actually dig to find out where and what they are selling.

I’m wondering when they are going to have the bake sale. : – )

It looks like he is “piss’n into the wind”-it won’t do much, beside bring attention along with a short term consumer feeding frenzy that won’t tackle the real problems at hand.
