Why does Fluther want to know if I am trying to solve a problem or start a discussion?

Asked by bhec10 (6458points) September 1st, 2009

Does this change anything or is it just for ourselves?
What if I pressed Solve a Problem but instead started a discussion? Would it matter?
To everyone that’s reading my question, does it matter if I pressed Solve a Problem or Start a Discussion?
Do you even know what I pressed?

You pressed “solve a problem.” Want to know how i figured that?

You should click on the option that represents your question because although it doesn’t matter right now, in the future, Fluther might have two sections to its questions. If that happens, then all the past questions will also be able to be sorted based on problem vs. discussion.

I’ve been wondering the same thing because currently I see no difference.. and some of the descriptions for why you are asking the question seem vague and similar.

It is Fluther’s way of trying for clarity, accuracy, and brevity in all questions. You can generate a discussion with either form. Are my statements clear, accurate and brief?

I can’t speak for Fred931, but here is my guess as to how he came up with “Solve a Problem.”

Your post is about an issue, i.e., the two choices that we are offered in asking a question. Your resolution would be once someone tells you why we are offered those two options. In my opinion that is solving a problem.

Although this could be a conversation starter, I think the real reason behind asking the question, is getting some answer to your question.

@bvdshec17, Am I right/wrong, or somewhere in the middle? Sort of curious my self as to what you picked

Because Fluther loves and cares for us all. All praise to Fluther and the Fluther gods.

I guessed completely.

Sorry the response took so long, though. Just a consequence of being busy.

Also, to answer the million-dollar question, I believe it is there so new flutherites will have a better understanding of whether or not the question is appropriate for this site. As a part of this, Bendrew has also added that grumpyfish bit at the bottom during the ask process, which also anti-nOObifies the website.

From evidence with other sites in the past, it is the first step to dividing the questions into categories in order to give the advertisers more leverage for targeting a specific group.
