What kind of engine should I use?

Asked by kibaxcheza (1091points) September 7th, 2009

I have a 91 Toyota MR-2 and I am going to turn it into a drag/circuit car but im very back and forward on the type of engine I want to put in it ( the stock engine is way too weak and old). I dont know if I should go for raw power in a V8 such as the tundra’s 5DUFE, or a Toystar type build, or if I want to get a straight 6 like the Supra’s 2JZ-GTE and the Gt-r r34 skyline (if I go twin turbo it would be series like the Supra’s set up rather than parallel like the Skyline’s).

The v8 set up would allow me to absolutely fly, but im afraid I would bend my chassis, or worse.

The straight 6 set up would give me much more control, but I feel like I would lose much of my dominance cutting from 600+ hp to a 320+ set up

What do yall think?

I personally don’t like the idea of swapping engines. If the engine didn’t come as an option for that car, I’m not interested, but that’s just me. I have seen some pretty damn quick MR2s though.

a more powerful engine usually needs another transmission that can handle the increased stress.
you might also want to upgrade your brakes and tyres, as well as suspension.
this might also mess up you weight distribution, so you should look into that as well.

@ragingloli Yeah, i also figured with the V8 i would want a solid chassis to prevent warping under the extreme torque. Im also going to get wider rear tires (even though i think it looks stupid). And i have the Tranny all figured out. With the V8 im going to go with an older big block so i can pick up a gateway shifter and throw in a transbreak. If i pick up the S6 ill go manual (prolly just take the tranny from the same engine set up). Suspension, coil compression, and all that other stuff will be taken care of when the set up is closer to completion so i know the weight i have to work with. And im also going to get bigger routers and some brimbo breaks for some serious stopping power.

@Axemusica I understand your position, I was pissed when my dad swapped the 350 cu.in 5.7L for a 250 cu.in. V8 (fortunately he didnt go with the 90’s Iroc V8…. I would have killed him). But even an sw20 with the 3s-gte and a beefy turbo doent have the domination i want, and as much as people may call my baby a disgrace to the Mr-2, They wont see any kind of regular Toyota badges (if i have badges ill find a way to get custom ones) on my blue blur as if flies past them on the way to the finish.
