Is drinking Seltzer just as good as drinking water?

Asked by ddbryant (25points) September 24th, 2009

I drink a lot of Seltzer water. I wonder if this counts as part of the recommended 8oz glasses of water I should every day. Or is the carbonation actually worse for me?

It does. I also drink a lot of soda or mineral water – I prefer it soft drinks. (Soda water in Australia is unflavoured – just carbonated.)

Yes. All liquid does. Some liquids have other things in them that might negtively impact health like sugar in soft drinks, phospates, etc. But liquid is liquid.

Lots of Seltzer water? Carbonation is not the concern here for your health. Sodium, the silent killer is the concern.

How much sodium is in your seltzer?

Sodium is NOT a silent killer. That is over dramatised popular but ignorant BS. Sodium is essential to health, it is excessive sodium, (particularly in someone who is hypertensive) that is to be avoided. The bottles of soda water (Seltzer) that I normally drink have 40mg to a one litre bottle. At that rate I would need to drink 60 litres to even approach the sodium RDA – hardly a risk.

@DarkScribe Not certain where you reside, but the average American is consuming almost double the daily suggested limit of sodium and should be concerned with reducing their intake

@SpatzieLover DarkScribe Not certain where you reside,

I am in Australia.

The average American, Brit, Aussie are all eating and drinking all manner of things that are in excess. Cutting back on soda or mineral water to reduce sodium intake is ludicrous. Cut back on salty foods, snacks, softdrinks (US/Sodas) etc., but not on something that contains so little. More people should be encouraged to switch from sodas to seltzers. To get to double the sodium limit with seltzers you would need to drink the equivalent of two car fuel tanks full of liquid. I doubt that is where the excess sodium is coming from.

I haven’t heard a doctor or nutritionist say “Be sure to drink 8 glasses of seltzer a day”.

I have never heard one say “don’t drink seltzer”.

This is the big problem with that 8 glasses of water statement. It is liquid that is necessary, not specifically water. It is the “water” in the liquid you drink that is hydrating. I would not be concerned about such a small amount of sodium in selter if you don’t have a blood pressure problem. I once cut back on salt, because my mother was horrified by how much I consumed, and I wound up too low on sodium when I had my next blood test. By the way 8 glasses is 8 ounce glasses. Many American’s think it is 8 of their glasses in their cupboard at home which are typically 12 or 16.
