Does Sugar have the reverse effect on you?

Asked by artemis (34points) October 15th, 2009

More specifically, does it make you sort of sleepy? Because just now I was eating twizzlers and I kind of dozed off on the bed for about an hour. Is this normal? And also, can caffeine have the same reaction too?

Caffeine makes me very tired.. I don’t know if it’s normal or not, but it happens.

@rangerr Me too, when I drink coffee it makes me sleepy. It doesn’t keep me awake.

No. Sugar is sweet and doesn’t make me sleepy.

Same here! But it’s because I have ADD. People with this disorder react differently than people without (: I had a “5 Hour Energy Drink” the other day and I felt so sick and tired!

I do not believe that certain food makes your more active, they might help, but there is no specific rule. For example, if you are tired, no matter how much coffee you drink, you will still feel sleepy !! So it really depends on you and not what you eat .

It’s not the sugar making you sleepy, its the insulin your body produces as a reaction to the consumed sugar.

@proXXi << what they said. Caffiene/sugar only provide you with temporary energy and the crash after leaves you more tired than you were before you consumed it. Natural sugars are what are going to keep you awake (like an apple) not man-made ones (like the amp I had for breakfast)

Not for me, but it has to do with blood sugar.
Your body basically uses insulin (sugar) as fuel. Intake of insulin with a response of drowsiness OR without a response from your body (insulin
resistance) can lead to health problems, like diabetes.
Have your blood sugar checked if it happens to you often.
