What is the typical rent for a one bedroom apartment in San Fransico?

Asked by Jobes32 (132points) October 17th, 2009

I would be looking for a location that would be popular for a mid/late twenties crowd. Fun, laid back, safe..

Check craigslist.org. It’s going to be between around $1000 to $2000.

Rent would require a trust fund for a lot of the mid/late twenties crowd.

Having done the apartment search in San Francisco just a few months ago, I can say that I didn’t see any one-bedrooms in San Francisco for as low as $1000 – at least not anything that would be in a neighborhood that is convenient to public transportation. You can find one bedrooms for $1600 on the low end…possibly $1500 but likely very small and without much charm. For $1800 you can find a nicer place, in a good neighborhood and even some extras like hard wood floors. And if you’re willing to spend around $2200 you can get a really nice place. On the high end, if you want fancy extras like a remodeled kitchen and amenities and a yard and parking and great location, you’re talking about at least $2500–3,000 a month. Note: a parking spot usually costs extra – it’s worth an extra $200—$300 a month. So some of the nicer places that cost $2400 and come with a parking lot could actually only cost you $2100 if you don’t have a car and the landlord lets you rent out the spot to someone else.

This is why lots of people live in the East Bay (Berkeley and Oakland) where rents are cheaper…and why so many people in San Francisco have roommates well into their 30’s. If you share a place with roommates you can expect to pay between $700–1,000 per month.

Note: You can find cheaper places as you go farther west towards the beach and into the fog belt (in the Richmond or the Sunset). Those places will get much more fog and be much farther from public transit – and a big annoyance if you hope to use BART a lot to get around the Bay Area. But if you have a car and don’t mind the fog, it could be a good way to get a nicer place for less money.
