How do I make my voice sound like its coming from another part of my body?

Asked by davidpaton02 (37points) October 21st, 2009

For a university project I am trying to build an installation that makes it seem like I’m talking out of a part of my body (ie arm) that doesn’t make sound. The goal is to make it seem like I’m ‘talking’ out of that body part. What is the best way to transport the sound from my mouth (tubes, refectors?) and what kind of materials should I use? Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.

Learn the art of ventriloquism very quickly and then you will be able to throw your voice anywhere.

Surgically remove your mouth, and place it where you want the sound to come from.

ventriloquism is referred to as throwing your voice.
You really don’t throw your voice. It is an illusion. Still coming from your face.

Also, if you dont feel like learning ventriloquism, you could record you voice and then play it back through small speakers on your arm.

@ChazMaz
Yeah, but if he doesnt move his mouth, and makes his arm move, people will interpret the voice as coming from the arm.

“people will interpret the voice as coming from the arm.’

“It is an illusion.” :-)

I need to build an installation, so something physically tangible. Ventriloquism won’t cut it I’m afraid.

You want your penis to talk, don’t you?

davidpaton02's avatar

That would be great, yes, but that’s a matter not related to my project.
Hmm I feel that maybe I’m not getting the serious responses I would like…

Be patient.. the peanut gallery will eventually die down and I’m sure someone with technical knowledge and creative flair will be able to help you. ;)

Oh, and the last two posts cracked me up big time.

Do you have to do it live? If not why can’t you just pre-record and use a speaker?

davidpaton02's avatar

Unfortunately I can’t do it live it needs to be an installation that different people can put on and use.

what about a microphone and a speaker?

davidpaton02's avatar

That’s a good idea, but I’m trying to stay away from electric enhancement of my voice.

So, basically you want something like a tube you can direct your voice through, attached to some sort of output, like a funnel? (oversimplified, but trying to determine what you’re looking for)

Yes that is pretty much the general idea I’ve got. Just looking for some input on materials are maybe some specifics of execution.

i’ve heard some people speak from behind themselves!
...probably because THEY HAD THEIR HEADS UP THEIR ASSES!

Oy. Sorry, david, I feel for ya.. it’s frustrating to not be able to get a serious answer. I want to help, but I’m not coming up with any really clever ideas. If it were me, I’d go wander around a Lowe’s or Home Depot and see if I got inspired by the materials available.

I found some instructions for you here and here and also there is a video here. Just google how to throw your voice, and you will find several sites with instructions/ideas. Good luck!
I hope you find an answer!
