Any advice on how a full time Carer (I have been told thats 'Care-Giver in America) can get financial help securing a property?

Asked by Chrissi85 (1070points) November 3rd, 2009

I am a full time carer (over 35 hours a week) and recieve Carers Allowance, Income Support and would recieve Housing Benefits if I had a place of my own. I am getting pretty desperate to secure somewhere to live as my current situation is not ideal. Does anyone know what financial support, if any, is available when it comes to securing a property, specifically for people on Carers Allowance/low income. I already know about Budgeting Loans but in the run up to Christmas this isn’t much of an option, plus I am looking to raise almost a grand, and a budgeting loan won’t even cover half. I was hoping there was more support out there for carers, doing an extremely low paid job that someone has to do.. but I can’t seem to find anything. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (England, by the way)

This probably won’t make much sense to Americans sorry!

Many of us here are Americans, so can’t really help you but I’m guessing the Local Authority in your area has housing assistance information, either online or if you go to their office.

Good luck and welcome to Fluther!

The trouble with the Local Authority here is that they really don’t want to give me money, they seem to think I will spend it on crack or glitter or something. I’ve tried begging, and being reasonable, but nothing seems to break through their impenetrable shell of Red Tape =( Thankyou anyway, and cheers for the nice welcome.

council housing.

The list is massive, especially round here. I think someone you are related to has to die before you can get their council house.

did you lodge the paperwork for council housing? as you are on a carer’s pension already you will be ahead of alot of people

Chrissi85's avatar

I don’t get a pension as I am not paid via Direct Payments, and am therefore entitled to diddly squat in the way of future security. Yes I was on the list for the past 7 years and never got anywhere.

maybe apply for pension? that way it would be more accessible are you in uk or australia

Chrissi85's avatar

I really don’t think I can get one to be honest, I will look into it but I am not holding out any hope

trailsillustrated's avatar

are you in australia

Chrissi85's avatar

No, England. The North of England to be precise

mmmm well I don’t know how it works there but in aus if you go lodge application for carer’s pension you can lodge at the same time for council housing- and get both pretty easy sorry can’t be of more help but good luck

I will look into it, thanks for the help
