Can I bathe my dog after an Advantage treatment?

Asked by Lacroix (537points) November 8th, 2009

It’s been a few days since he’s had a treatment, and because he’s so active and sweats so much, I like to give him a bath once a week to keep the stink away (apparently males of ALL species have a problem with BO!).

Is it safe to bathe him now, or will it mess up the treatment?

I could be wrong but I believe it only needs to sit overnight. You should be able to wash him.

<edit> According to their website, it works within 12 hours. Wash that puppy!

Yes, but you need to use a special shampoo. One that’s detergent-free. Adam’s and Advantage both sell a shampoo specifically for this.

I second @gemiwing on the special shampoo.

The directions used to be do not bathe 3 days before or after treatment, but that could have changed. But check on the box, it should tell you.

I never heard about using a special shampoo, did you mean for the odor or because of the Advantage? I use people’s soap free shower gel on my dogs, so much cheaper than human or dog shampoo and it smells nice too.

He shouldn’t acquire an odor that quickly though, does he have long hair that gets urine soaked? If so a judicious trim might help. If that is not the source, check ears, eyes and skin, they can often be the cause and can be treated one way or another.

Yes, you could, but I would recommend that you simply brush your dog thoroughly with a powdered dog cleaner, or Arm and Hammer Soda.
