What would you tell your teacher if she called you while you were skipping class?

Asked by The_Inquisitor (3163points) November 11th, 2009

So, I took a class for extra credit, and also because it sounded pretty interesting as well. I can’t say that I’ve regretted being in it, but with my schedule and grade 12 year, it feels like all the pressure is on me. For a while now, my friend and I (both enrolled for that class) have been feeling it to be quite tiresome. It goes on for 3 hours straight, right after school! (only twice a week though)

Yesterday was the 2nd time that we decided to skip her class. The first time, we had called in sick ourselves, but this time we didn’t care to. I was at the mall when I got a phone call on my cell, and I don’t have caller ID. When I picked up, it was my teacher. “Hello ________, will you guys be coming into class today?”
Me: “Ummm…... O_O… Hold on!”

And then I put her on hold to tell my friend who had called. I had no idea what to say. I never had a teacher CALL me before. It was strange… I took too long and to my relief, she hung up on me.

What should I have said to her? Just “no I will not”? I wouldn’t know how to reply if she asked why…

“I can’t make it today.”

The_Inquisitor's avatar

“why not?”

avvooooooo's avatar

“I’m having a personal issue.”

The_Inquisitor's avatar

(I couldn’t even think of something as simple as that to say… >_>)

The_Inquisitor's avatar

Oh, Lol, if only I had thought of that. I think I’m going to drop that class anyways. It’s been on my mind for a while.

If its not something that would really help you in the future, do it. I know from my personal experience that its better to do things that will help you in the future because before you know it, the future’s here and you’re regretting the decision.

It seems like the teacher has your gig. She knows you are skipping and was calling you on it. No reason to lie. Just saying “no” would have been sufficient. Telling lies would probably make her lose even more respect for you.

Are you in college?
If so, its your own money that shes wasting. I wouldn’t mind telling her that. Its your own business if you want to ruin a grade.

stop there before class begins, and tell the teacher that you have a huge project, and that is why you can’t make it.

Dr_C's avatar

Just drop the class. This whole skipping is disrespectful and unappreciative of her work. It amy seem too long to you and it might dissapoint you as far as your expectations for the class, but ditching is just rude.

I would say what the guy in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist says: “I’m taking a mental health day..” Michael Cera is so awkwardly funny.

The_Inquisitor's avatar

@pinkparaluies, no.. grade 12 is still high school.

This class I’m taking has no benefit to my future at all.

@Dr_C, Yeah, I will. I don’t want to talk to her now after that though. =(

avvooooooo's avatar

@desiree333 That is an old, old statement. Not original to Michael Cera at all.

Dr_C's avatar

@curiouscat I’m sure she’ll appreciate you being direct with her about not wanting or not being able to take the class anymore.

The_Inquisitor's avatar

@Dr_C , My mom’s glad that I want to drop it, since it’s a lot of time wasted. Thing is, I don’t really want to drive all the way there just to tell her that I’m dropping, and explain all my stress to her. Do you think a phone call would suffice?

From a former teacher….who appreciated the truth…

“Miss Tiddly, I am not going to lie to you….or make excuses….we will not be coming to class today….I just could not bring myself to come today…I am really sorry.”

Then, the next class…..take her something….a flower, a small token. And then ask to talk to her….and TELL HER why you are having trouble with the class.

Guess what? Teachers (okay…teachers who were like me) really cared and you might fnd she will figure out a way to keep you in class.

Tell her this:

“Miss Tiddly….the class is long and we get tired….can we stretch and take more breaks or have coffee/snacks in the class?”

There really are creative solutions….just tell the truth.

You don’t want to do the class because you are under lots of pressure this year and the class goes for too long, yet you were at the mall?

The_Inquisitor's avatar

@shrubbery, yeah, well I’d rather be out doing other stuff and relaxing than being in class.

The first time that I called in “sick” I went to the library to study for a math exam.. The library is INSIDE the mall as well. 3 hours is pretty long, I wasn’t only in the mall the whole night.

I would be all for skipping the class, if you used the time you would have spent there to do your already building up homework and other useful things, like, as you said, study for a math exam, rather than being in a class you don’t need.
But if you’re just going to go to the mall and procrastinate then you’re wasting your time anyway, and you might as well do the class as you say you find it interesting even if you don’t need it.
I was in your dilemma when picking classes for my final year. I could do five subjects and not have a free line, or 3 free periods a week for homework/study, or do four subjects and have the free line. I was all for the free line, but the year before all I did in those periods was muck around with friends that had the same line off, and ended up wasting more time. I still had a free period this year, but I learned to use it more wisely. My friend did five subjects and she has said that she actually manages her time better without the free periods.
So yeah, sounds like you’re going to do the right thing, and you do need to relax sometimes, so drop the class, just don’t procrastinate and waste allll your time :)

Funny how when we skip class, it’s all about us. Obviously the teacher has done some work preparing as well, and maybe is excited about what she is planning. She has to get some serious by-in so students won’t want to skip her class.

Clair's avatar

Why is a high school teacher calling you anyway?
No 1: Don’t skip. Don’t waste your time or hers.
No 2: Why was she calling you?! Is that not against school policy or something?

Dr_C's avatar

@Clair maybe she’s young and lonely and he’s jsut ever so dreamy?

pinkparaluies's avatar

Hah! Okay. We’ll see what social services has to say when you’ve skipped this class enough. Isn’t that truancy?

avvooooooo's avatar

@pinkparaluies As was written in the question, this is an optional, elective class. For extra credit. After school hours. Had you read the question, you’d know that no one is in danger of any kind of legal repercussions for not going to this class.

So no, no its not truancy.

now now… let’s not let the thread devolve into a war of words… why don’t we just settle this like civilized people? with a tub of jello, bikinis and 4 rounds of 1 minute each?

Bugabear's avatar

Wrong number.

avvooooooo's avatar

@pinkparaluies Threats of imminent legal action carry weight when it might actually happen. When its obvious that it won’t, its kind of useless to use an empty threat.

pinkparaluies's avatar

@avvooooooo What threats are you talking about? Truancy?
I’ve always thought that when you don’t get along with someone.. you politely ignore them. I’d enjoy it if you’d do that <3

avvooooooo's avatar

@pinkparaluies Roughly, “Social services is going to get you!” Its an empty threat when it doesn’t apply. It really does help to read the question before commenting.
