I just purchased a firewire 800/400 cable, how do I transfer files from one computer to another?

I purchased the Belkin FireWire 800/400 9-pin to 6-pin cable to transfer files from one laptop to another… how do I do this? I am transfering files from a macbook to a macbook pro.

You’d think for a 33 dollar purchase, the people at the apple store would explain how to use it and not tell you to just “google it.” Whack!!

On the computer you want to copy FROM, launch Utilities/Migration Assistant, then follow the screen prompts.

Have them connected when you are setting up your new computer. Transferring over firewire will be one of the options that comes up.

or reboot one computer and hold the T as it starts up, that turns it into a Firewire Harddrive, you’ll see the drive pop up on the other connected machine, it’s pretty “schweet”

wait… i just tried to do that, i went to the utilities/migration assistant and it asked what i wanted to transfer so i said no to all 3 things it asked except for other files and folders… alllll this random stuff transferred and i don’t want it on my computer. i want to transfer ONLY my music, help?

well, see my above post, reboot the “donor” and transfer the music to the “patient” machine.

@iwamoto: there isn’t an option that says music .. one said applications…. i forgot the others, but it wasn’t that simple. i’m calling apple now :(

so let me get this right, you reboot the other machine that you want to get the music from, hold down the T so that it shows the firewire icon, the hard drive of that machine shows up on the desktop of your machine that you want to transfer the music too, you navigate to /Users/Samantha/Music and then it gives you options instead of letting you copy the iTunes Music folder ? if it gives you those options in the Finder i’d call apple too…
