What is the most disappointing song ever?

Asked by davidk (1432points) November 25th, 2009

Have you ever heard a song that felt sooo deep and meaningful…only to read the lyrics, and discover that you had attributed FAR more meaning to the words than the lyricist had intended?

I find that some musicians have a knack for generating a profound sounding song with lyrics that are actually quite shallow and meaningless.

For me: Viva la Vida by Coldplay is an example. The song is sheer genius, but, upon closer inspection, the real meaning is elusive. It is more about what a person hearing the song brings to it than anything else.

Blame it on the Rain – Milli Vanilli. I was devastated.

Anything by Foo Fighters since Grohl’s voice crapped out.

I hate Shakira’s new song! I used to be a big fan of hers but now it just seems like she’s getting very commercial. The music video is ridiculous, she looks like a striper. I miss the simple young girl that used to just sing along with her guitar.

David Bowie’s Modern Love. Great song, stupid lyrics.

I know when to go out
I know when to stay in
Get things done

I catch a paper boy
But things don’t really change
I’m standing in the wind
But I never wave bye-bye

But I try, I try

There’s no sign of life
It’s just the power to charm
I’m lying in the rain
But I never wave bye-bye

But I try, I try

Never gonna fall for
Modern love – walks beside me
Modern love – walks on by
Modern love – gets me to the church on time
Church on time – terrifies me
Church on time – makes me party
Church on time – puts my trust in god and man
God and man – no confessions
God and man – no religion
God and man – don’t believe in modern love

It’s not really work
It’s just the power to charm
I’m still standing in the wind
But I never wave bye bye

But I try, I try

@filmfann Wow! Those are stupid lyrics. It’s like none of it really makes any sense.

I still like Grohl’s voice. Uhm for me, it is any remake of a Beatles song that isn’t done by U2. Most people just destroy them (like Fiona Apple’s version of Across the Universe), but at least U2 seems to respect them.
