Any suggestions on how to pack random/different types of jewelry?

Asked by SamIAm (8703points) November 30th, 2009

I need to pack up all of my jewelry… usually, when I go away I use a small jewelry case or a small box. But I have a lot more jewelry to pack than usual… this includes large beaded necklaces, delicate small earrings, larger earrings, bracelets, etc…

How have you packed your jewelry before? I am planning on using small zip lock bags, boxes and plastic containers but most of this stuff needs to be packed with me on a plane. Suggestions?

Do you have access to a vacuum-sealing machine, like a FoodSaver? I’d layer the jewelry into a big vacuum bag, separating the layers with foam packing sheets or tissue, then pull a light vacuum to snug the package up and keep the pieces from jostling each other. This would be much lighter and more compact than boxes.

I use to work for a jewlery firm and we used tissue paper to wrap the item and then placed that into zip lock bags. Mulitple small bags can be placed in a larger one. This is how jewlery stores get their merchandise in.

Hi, Samantha….I deal with this issue all the time when I travel.

What I do (and I realize this may not work for you) is I put all the valuable jewelry (that means grandma’s cameo) in small zippy cloth makeup bags you can get at the five and dime. Some of these are cloth pouches that hold pencils/pens for school——which are often a lot less expensive than makeup bags and work just as well. They are a good size. I wrap the jewelry in tissue first and then put them in the zipper pouches. Then, I put those small pouches in a larger makeup bag and put it in my carry-on. I always do that. I get all my non-valuable and stuff that could be replaced and put that in the same small bags and stick them as far in the middle and bottom of my regular suitcase. (That would be only if your carry on is getting loaded with things that are not valuable and you won’t worry if they get lost.)

QVC sells some superb, superb, jewelry rolls and bags. Just go to QVC and search for “Prezerve” (with a z). You can watch the video demos and see how much stuff you can cram into one or two of those bags….it’s amazing. I just bought one but have yet to try it on a trip. I usually do the above.

You can get small specialty jewelry plastic bags with a zip lock on them on ebay, too. If you get the heavy duty ones, you can stick brooches in them and they will not puncture the plastic.

Good luck on your trip!

Iwould never use plastic baggies because of tarnishing. You might want something like this

That you can organize so every thing is at your fingertips or if you need to store you just put it on a shelf. And is ant-tarnish.

I have a less expensive version of this in oak to match my bedroom furniture

It has drawers for pins, earring and ring trays and pegs to keep bracelets and necklaces from getting tangled and a couple of deeper drawers for accessories.
