What do my fluctuating exam result dreams mean? if anything...?

Asked by nebule (16452points) December 6th, 2009

I’ve had several dreams about my exam result that is due in two weeks time.
The first dream I had I got 85% (I couldn’t believe it)
The second dream I had I got 70% (I was gutted)
The third dream I had I got 100% (and was obviously elated!!)
The fourth dream I had I got 64% (miserable)

The fact is that if I get 85% for my exam I will have passed the course with a distinction, anything over 40% and I pass anyway. I really want the distinction of course.

However, I wondered what these dreams collectively tell you about me and what you read into it if anything

Maybe it means the exam is a big focus for you at the moment and depending on how you otherwise feel (good or bad), your brain represents it in exam results?

….if you are that focused on it, you probably will do great :)

i think it means nothing.

A few weeks ago I read something here on Fluther about how we cannot use technology in our dreams. Earlier this week I had a dream where someone called me and asked if I could give her my phone number (which doesn’t make sense btw, she had my number, which might prove that theory right). Anyway to cut a long story short, it took me an hour or so to read out the numbers to her, I kept screwing up (reading the first 5 numbers and all of a sudden there were letters, so I had to start over). I didn’t feel bad or incompetent after I woke up, I simply got reminded that our dreams are more like flowing rivers instead of set scenario’s. Wow, I never thought I could sound this newage :)

I’m only telling you about my dream, because I don’t think these dreams are focused on the outcome of the test, but more about how you accommodate to the constant changes that happen. Dreams constantly change (especially things that exist in the dream outside of your feelings), the outcome is not what matters but how you experienced it does. In this case the outcome (0–100%) probably changed on how you felt that day, what changed in the dream and for the rest it’s simply you’re brain throwing out different scenario’s.

@markyy…so my dreams about it are more of an exploration,...perhaps even a preparation for how I will deal with the actual result when it comes? Which would make sense to me really because I want to be pleased with myself if I pass (which I’m pretty sure I will do) but it’s more about high the result is. Hmmm i guess my anxiety about it, is that I won’t be happy if I get less than 85%, but the likelihood is that I won’t get 85% (‘cause that’s really tough to do) and so want to be happy with less than that… but don’t know how I will be able to….

perhaps my dreams are telling me that I just won’t be as happy as I would like to be if I got 85%... but likewise the experience of elation with a result of 85 wouldn’t be anything like that of 100%... I dunno lol xxx

You’re very nervous about the exam.

Exam and term paper dreams are classic; they reflect the anxiety. Are you ever naked? Can you find the venue? Do you feel you have done no work and no research? Forget the details. Recognize the feelings and then let them go.

nebule's avatar

@Val123 I’ve already sat the exam

Val123's avatar

@lynneblundell I missed something….you had these dreams AFTER the exam?

nebule's avatar

yes….“I’ve had several dreams about my exam result that is due in two weeks time”

why,...does that seem strange to you? @Val123

Val123's avatar

Allow me to rephrase. So you started having the dreams after you took the exam, but before you’d gotten the results, which you wouldn’t get for another 2 weeks, correct?

gailcalled's avatar

@lynneblundell: Again, the details don’t matter. Once you get your grades, your anxiety will abate, I hope. Until you start worrying about the next worrisome event in your life.

nebule's avatar

@Val123 yes that’s correct

@gailcalled that’s very perceptive I wish I could switch the worrying off…any tips?

gailcalled's avatar

@lynneblundell: No tips. Everyone has anxiety dreams relating to something. Exams, school work, and term papers are typical triggers. If you were an excavator, you might dream about hitting a power line when digging a foundation, for example.

Let us know when the grade arrives (if not the grade itself) and see whether you feel calmer. Then you get to worry about that little Christmas gifts list

Val123's avatar

@lynneblundell Ok then! I think the dreams just literally means you’re worried about the outcome of the exams. If there was nothing like that to relate it to directly, then I’d say you were worried about being a good wife, or good mother or good employee—being good at something, getting things “right.”

Yes, please let us know the grades or WE’RE going to start dreaming about them!

nebule's avatar

lol..I will do thank you guys and girlies xxx

Val123's avatar

@lynneblundell Hey! When I woke up this mornin’ you had a 100%!! Way to go! (Um, in my dreams the test was like, a second grade test over naming whether a color was a primary or secondary color…so, um…what class is this in, anyway? So I can have a more realistic dream for ya! :)

nebule's avatar

lol…Philosophy…it’s called Philosophy and the Human Situation and it’s going towards a degree in Philosophy and Psychology

Val123's avatar

Uhhh. Now that’s something to think abut!

nebule's avatar

woooooooooHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

exam results are IN!!!

82% in overall examinable component…85% overall assessment score… and have been awarded a DISTINCTION…..

I keep crying with shock and amazement… I don’t think it’s sunk in yet!!!

wildflower's avatar

Congrats and well done :)

nebule's avatar

thank you… the funny thing is… I should have needed 85% on the OES in order to get a distinction, so when I was looking at the result in big red letters: DISTINCTION against the score 82%... I’m sat there staring at the screen thinking…something’s not right ..like in my dream…!!!

Then I read down a bit on the page and saw that it said:

“Well done!

You have achieved the highest course result status possible. For a distinction (pass grade 1) students normally have to achieve an OES of 85 and an OCAS of 85. Examination and Assessment Boards have limited discretion to set these thresholds slightly lower”

and…I’m like just so grateful and so pleased with myself!

@lynneblundell Yaaaayyyyy! Maybe you’ll get a decent night’s sleep tonight! So happy for you. :)
