Is it likely that someone could have depression for a long time and just have it go away on it's own?

Asked by Justnice (923points) December 11th, 2009 from iPhone

I think I must have had depression when I was younger. I remember being sad all the time, I had no interest in anything, all I wanted was to go to sleep and never wake up. This went on for years(at least 5). I even tried to kill myself once! But then I started to feel better and eventually I became one of the happiest people I know. So is it likely that I had depression and didn’t know it?

It’s not impossible. Even broken bones eventually mend themselves, if the victim manages to live through the injury, isn’t prey to attacks, and can have some time to recuperate. The body ‘can’ heal many diseases and injuries on its own (even smallpox, as deadly as that often can be / has been) isn’t 100% lethal.

But I wouldn’t counsel this as “the way to fix depression”, either. I’m glad you survived; please don’t recommend that others just “ignore it and it’ll go away”.

It’s more likely that you did small things to change/heal than it just ‘went away’. Little things like eating better, writing in a journal, talking to people who care and exercise can go a long way to healing depression. It’s a good thing to get rid of.

It happens. Depressive episodes pass, situational depressions are subject to situational change.

I do believe it’s very possible to be depressed and not even know it – while back people were telling me that I was depressed, and I thought they were crazy, but when you start to lose your zext for life and energy tobe productive then you might be depressed or on the borderline of it

Very unlikely. I’ve had depression for most of my life and even medications do little good

I’m sure it’s not unheard of. Our brains are pretty good at re-wiring themselves. But you could have had Mono, sometimes this makes people very depressed.

Mono? For 5 years?!

Yes; it is quite possible that you had mild “depression” and as you matured ; you came out of it slowly….

It does happen; just not too often . Consider yourself one of the LUCKY ones ..

Yes it’s possible (it happened to me too). Sometimes depression has a circumstantial cause and it goes away when something in your life changes. I also think that as we get older and more experienced, and able to take better control of our lives, that also can have an effect, as can positive thought. However I do also think it’s very unusual for it to go away by itself, and you are very lucky.

It depends on wether you have a clinical depression (that is usually caused by a metabolic disorder in your brain) or if you simply suffer from mood swings every now and then. The latter can go a way if e.g. your circumstances in life change. There is however no way for you to find this out on your own. You will have to see a specialist. Don’t be afraid of it. In both cases, seeing a specialist is a good thing. For the clinical depression, there are great remedies today that help you lead an almost normal life again. For rather mild depressions that are basically reactive in nature (caused by something in your life) it does help talking about it with someone who is psychologically trained.
