What would you do if you were Trapped in an Elevator?

Asked by tyrantxseries (4722points) December 12th, 2009

This guy was trapped for 41hrs, story here, not a new one but still, 41 hrs alone in a box hanging over nothing but (alot of) air and the (unforgiving) ground level…
What would you do if in his situation?
Would you be able to “keep it together”?

Well, if I had my cell phone, I’d obviously call someone…......if I didn’t, well, I’d probably lose my mind!

I think i would be able to keep it together..and just sit still for how ever long it took to be rescued, that is until i needed to urinate or other : /

I have been trapped in an elevator. To aggravate the situation, the emergency call button didn’t work. It was in an office building after 6:00 pm and most people had left for the day. We banged on the elevator doors and yelled until someone heard it and called the fire department. The elevator was stuck between floors and the firemen put a ladder down in it for us to climb out. We were only in there for about an hour and half but it felt like forever!

I guess when you’re stuck in an elevator there isn’t much to do at all.

I just hope that if I ever get stuck in an elevator for more than 30 minutes, it’s one of the rare moments that I don’t have my newborn baby with me.

I would freak out BIG time!!! I don’t like the idea!

If there is a way out I’d find it for sure. Being trapped in a little box for any length of time sounds really awful.

I was stuck in one for about an hour in my old college dorm. Another woman was in there too, a stranger, with many shopping bags, so she subjected me to looking at all the “cute things” she’d bought. Since it was the holiday season, they got a bunch of people from the dorm to sing carols for us outside the shaft of one of the floors we were stuck between, finally devolving into songs like “Help!” by the Beatles. Finally, maintenance showed up and let us out, but that hour of Christmas songs and fashion show was pretty excruciating.

I’ve been trapped in an elevator three times- once at work, when 7 months pregnant, once in a parking garage, and once within the last 12 months, at work. In the first instance, it was between the 11th and 12th floors, the men on the elevator were able to pry the doors open, and we climbed out- the floor was about waist-high, and scrambling out in a dress with a huge belly was not easy. I walked the 15 floors up and down to my office for the rest of my pregnancy. The parking garage, all the power went out, and the cell phone didn’t work, I couldn’t find the emergency phone on the wall. It was on the lower level, so at least I felt safe, that it wouldn’t fall. I kept beating on the door and yelling, and after about an hour, the security guard found me. I got free parking for 6 months. The last time was scary because it was on the express elevator that didn’t stop between the 2nd and 16th floors. I got on at 16 to go up a few floors, and when the doors shut the elevator dropped about 8 inches and then stopped. The power didn’t go out. I found the phone, called security, and they had me out in about 5 minutes.

I’d probably just Fluther on my iPhone.

I’d spend my time “pep” talking myself out of a panic attack, sorting the contents of my purse, eating the fuzzy tic tacs, clearing out the in box on my cell phone, banging on the doors, hollering and finally laughing at the sorry situation.

It all depends on what she wants to do.

charliecompany34's avatar

don’t freak out. breathe normally. talk about your kids with others on board. if you’re by yourself, just be cool. accept it as a moment of peace and quiet.

chyna's avatar

Well, if I was “trapped” with an attractive guy, I’d be getting to know him better.

Parrappa's avatar

@chyna, I hope I meet you in an elevator some day.

stemnyjones's avatar

chyna's avatar

@Parrappa Haha, yes it could be interesting to say the least.

We were working out of town and my buddy got trapped in an elevator for 7 hrs. Luckily he was coming back from the store and had a twelve pack and some dinner with him. Hopefully if I ever get stuck in one I am as set up as he was, or I guess I’ll have to get all mission impossible and try to climb the heck out.

@stemnyjones Good point, waiting for the answer from parrappa.

I would press the emergency button or switch…. OR use the emergency phone box .

Then; I would sit down and relax ; breathing lightly to preserve oxygen .. and wait for the elevator to work again .

I’d probably freak out a little bit. Then I’d do a lot of what he did – force the doors open, look up around the ceiling for a way out, text for help (is that what he was doing? hard to tell.), sleep. At one point or another I’d probably cry. I’d be worried and scared for sure, but I think for the most part I’d be able to maintain composure.

Parrappa's avatar

@stemnyjones, it’s a man crush, I can’t explain it.

pearls's avatar

I have been trapped only once. I just remained calm until help arrived.

MountainMomma's avatar

Dance around to the elevator music, not even considering that their might be cameras!=D

curlysue's avatar

That depends who i was trapped with.somebody i would love too be trapped with.

faye's avatar

What about peeing??!!

stemnyjones's avatar

@Parrappa I was less confused about the man crush and more confused over how you’re wet for him :D

GQ for you.

I’d probably masturbate. When I became bored with that, I would just write. I always carry pen/pencil and paper.

I got stuck in one for three and a half hours, alone, I slept most of the time, they had to wake me up to “rescue” me.. ha

it would be shitty to get stuck with someone else, especially if they were freaking out
