How does a public transit bus get it's number?

Asked by LeopardGecko (1237points) December 14th, 2009

I’ve always wondered this as they seem as if they are completely done at random. Except for a few buses that have their numbers based on the major street they head down.

I’ve always wondered that. And I don’t have an answer, I’m following this so I may attain one.

Here in Chicago they are mostly random, except, like you describe, on the South Side, where east-west streets are numbered and many bus numbers match the street.
