Is it illegal to change the firmware in my xbox 360 DVD ROM, if I will never go on line, and will only play games that I have bought?

Asked by UScitizen (4306points) December 15th, 2009

The games are ridiculously expensive, about $60. I want to buy games at retail and protect them from damage. I want to produce a playable copy, and archive the store bought disk, so I don’t damage it. This will allow me to play my copy, and if it is scratched, no real loss. I will never play on line, and will never give or loan any copies to any one. Is this legal?

I’m not sure about Xbox 360 games, but Bluray and PS3 games have a Teflon coating which makes it pretty hard to damage accidentally.

I want to rob a bank and not spend any of the money. Is that ok?

…..you’ll use it illegally at some point.

That firmware was designed as an anti-piracy measure.
Defeating such a security measure for any reason is illegal.

If it makes you feel any better, there are challenges in court as to how this conflicts with Fair Use, but for the moment the MPAA, RIAA, and game makers have the upper hand legally.

I hate the RIAA.
