what is the difference between obeying someone and sucking up?

The difference is one follows orders if necessary based on the authority and the other is losing your identity and acting in a way that seeks favor by placing the others needs far above your own but ironically for your own selfish gain.

Sucking up is when you say or do something most people would normally not do for someone because you are looking for validation.

Ask yourself is the obedience due to respect or not. Lack of respect indicates the latter. It also depends on whose askeing. If you feel threatened by the person who obeys, you might say he/she is a suck-up
Sucking up is doing things to curry favour with someone with the power to promote you or whose appreciation will directly or indirectly benefit you.
Obedience to recognized leaders such as managers, bosses, or those who outrank you in the company or organization is expected and usually appropriate.

i think that the difference between obeying and sucking up is when you obey someone you are listening and doing what they say because maybe you want to and when you suck up you are listening and doing what that person says so that they think your the better one or to maybe get a favor back
Obeying is actually following someone’s orders because you have to without any incentives. If you knew you would get some reward out of obeying, then that is sucking up. Like if I wash the dishes when my mother tells me to because I know I will be able to go out with my friends afterwards.
I am doing it because there is an incentive…not because I am obedient.

yes that is what i thought that people can choose to obey… now i’m comfused
One requires you to stand upright.
The other requires you to bend at the waist…or kneel, if you prefer…and pucker up.
when you suck up you’re looking for a reward beyond what you would get from simple obedience. that could be tangible but often it’s more to the effect of improved standing in the eyes of the person asking for the effort. you ask me to get you a glass of water, I bring you a glass of water – that’s obeying (and yes it’s a choice), I bring you a glass of mineral water with a slice of lime, three ice cubes, and a little parasol in a crystal glass, I’m sucking up, probably because (and this is a common reason) because I want you to notice me.

Sucking up is obedience…just in a more exaggerated, annoying form.

No, sucking up has nothing to do with obedience and has to do with self interests and what someone imagines they can get from another. Following orders from a drill sergeant is obedience. Bringing him candy bars in the hopes that he doesn’t give you more push ups is SUCKING UP. The term is used very loosely today with no real relevance to it’s meaning. The video I posted is a good example.
