Time for first backup in Time Machine?

Asked by bmhit1991 (246points) February 28th, 2008 from iPhone

I just got a hard drive that was being used on a PC, and I’m wondering how long initial backups take.

I use SuperDuper! to clone my hard drive to a external firewire drive. It takes about 2 hours to copy it. It is about 80 Gigs of data.

I use SuperDuper too, I’m still running OS X 10.4 then I canno’t give you my experience about it.

The first backup with super duper takes a long time, but after this backup, I only perform a weekly incremental backup, copying only modified files since my last backup. Theses weekly backups take less than a quarter hour.

I Think Time Machine is a really good tool for all days users, even for other people, but it’s not a ultimate tool since it doesn’t support the “incremental layer backup” (e.g., on a movie of 4.0 GB, you modify only on image in this movie, the intelligent backup will only copy this modified image and not the entire file) since Leopard is not still supporting ZFS format.
