Why does my English bulldog sleep ALL the time lately.

Asked by chian (554points) January 11th, 2010

i know the breed is a sleeper but seriously, except for me taking her out for walks and eating, she is sleeping. She can go for hours non stop and she always did but not this bad! Should i be worried? i mean perhaps it has to do with the time of year? She is only one and a half.

Bull dogs have some inherited health problems. But she may require more or less exercise depending on how much you are giving her. Plus if you live in a hot climate, they don’t do well there. If its winter, maybe she is just like the rest of us. She just feels like hibernating. If you think it isn’t anything like that, then take her to a vet. If you had her fixed recently, that may do it as well. My cousins dog went from an active dog to a really lazy dog after getting fixed. They have a female.

How old is she?

It is probably worth taking her to the vet for a blood test just to rule out any health problems. Have you noticed any other changes in her behaviour?

I often find that dogs sleep a lot due to boredom and feeling demotivated. How often does she get walked and for how long? Does she have much opportunity to be active even when she is not on a walk ie: playing with a ball etc? How often is she left on her own and for how long?

Certain breeds sleep more the older they get and Bulldogs do tend to be one of those breeds if they have the chance. Hopefully it is nothing to worry about but it may be a good idea to keep her mind active.

Edit: Sorry, I have just noticed that you already told us her age.

As you said, it’s normal for English bulldogs to sleep. Usually, they are energetic as puppies and they begin slowing down as they mature into adulthood. I suspect that your dog is in this slow down phase. Here’s a link if you want more info: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/bulldog.htm

In conclusion, unless she’s been sleeping more than usual, there’s probably no need to worry about her. If you are still concerned, you can always take her to the vet for a check up and discuss your dog’s sleeping habits with him/her.

Thanks all,

I took her to the vet today and they told me she may have thyroid problem so have tested her for that now. @tomfafa, no ala i am not boring so i dont bore her, @leanne she gets to walk out 3,4 times a day and one of the walks is a loooong walk for like 30 minutes, also she has a balcony, about 20 toys and me and my bofriend willing her to play. Anyway i hope its not serious, the vet said if thyroid will have to take meds forever…..poor little lola, will find out tomorrow so fingers crossed!
