What are good dietary supplements to increase the quality of one's sleep?

Asked by dmanexe (6points) January 27th, 2010

I have heard the effects of melatonin promote and allow you to fall asleep earlier, and easier, but is there anything to keep you asleep, consistently, without the reliance of addictive sleep aides?

Valerian root is excellent. It’s available at health food stores in tablet form.

@Sampson Actually, depending on how much you consume, alcohol can have an opposite effect by reducing REM cycles and their duration during sleep.

I use valerian occasionally too and find it helpful with falling asleep.

There was a single study that looked at a combination of valerian and lemon balm and found improvements in quality of sleep as well as legth of sleep in healthy people.

Melatonin supplements, taken half an hour before bedtime. They are available OTC, which is a positive, but most of them aren’t regulated by the FDA. So you may want to do some research or check with your doctor to make sure they won’t interact badly with any medicines you’re already taking.

Melatonin can cause mild depression the day after, so be careful.

I drink warm milk and take a hot lavender bath. It makes me sleep like a baby.

I agree Melatonin is great to help you fall asleep, but (in my experience) it also makes it really hard to get up in the morning and keeps me pretty groggy during the day.
