First Valentine's Day...HELP!

Asked by Chongalicious (2771points) February 2nd, 2010

Problem 1: I’m broke! (but if you can suggest something affordable-ish, please do!)

Problem 2: I’ve never had a boyfriend on Valentine’s Day before… >_<

Problem 3: I’m a terrible gifter! I know people so well yet can’t get a simple gift right!

Problem 4: I’m afraid both of getting a gift way too huge, and one that’s really crappy. I have no idea what to look for, or even what I could do for him. But I really wanna have a great V-Day!

The boyfriend: Been with him 3 months. Loves graphic tee’s. Loves video games. Loves my food ;). Is a lot like me. So if you feel you understand my personality from previous encounters here; there you go. :) He is very outgoing, yet enjoys quiet time too. He’s my couch potatoe yet likes playing sports (weird I know haha). Oh yeah, he’s also pretty strange in his jokes. But would a gag gift be appropriate?

Extra details: We’re youngins, so don’t get too kinky, now! Lol also I’m in good with most of his friends, and I know his family very well if that helps you at all. Neither of us can drive; which makes it even harder! But I want him to remember this! Flutherites you’ve never let me down before! It’s in your hands haha. But seriously:

Please answer if you think of anything, any and all advice is appreciated :D

Side note: Violet, we actually want to celebrate the holiday! :P haha

Can you cook him a nice meal? Guys usually aren’t into sweets too much, but maybe something with a really yummy chocolate dessert. Candles, the Reverend Al, a nice bubble bath….what’s not to love?

Chongalicious's avatar

Crap I forgot to include that! He does love his chocolate, thanks! :)

Homemade brownies. Good, gooey ones. Decorated with icing and sprinkles.

Chocolate cake balls are wonderful. Here’s how you make them: bake a chocolate sheet cake in a 13×9 pan. When cool, crumble it up, then mix in a can of frosting until it makes a dough like playdough. Chill in the refrigerator for about 2 hours. Roll into balls about the size of a golf ball, then dip in chocolate coating, the kind you melt in the microwave. Store in the refrigerator. You can add things like mini chocolate chips or mini m&ms into the dough, or chopped maraschino cherries.

Cook him dinner for sure. Just do something simple. Watch a really romantic movie and cuddle on the couch after eating the meal you made for him.

Chongalicious's avatar

@PandoraBoxx mmm hopefully I don’t eat them all before they make it to him! :O haha

@Oxymoron thanks, that sounds like a plan!

A good ticket for nice movie is not a bad idea.
A homemade chocolate cake.
A cute alarm clock(so unique, and he’ll put it near his bed as he remembers you).
A nice shirt/hat for men(according to his taste/style).

Chongalicious's avatar

@Doctor_D Well there is this shirt I’ve had my eye on for him LMAO! Not so sure it’s valentine material, though. I have to say I’ve never heard that alarm clock idea but I love it! Thank you so much :D

Dont worry about getting him something. Valentines day is your holiday.

Just make sure you return the favor a month later

Are you artistic/have awesome ideas? Get a plain white t-shirt and draw something awesome on it. Proceed with fantastic gift-giving. I know I’d love that, personally.

Chongalicious's avatar

@uberbatman LMAO!!! That was hilarious! Where do you find this stuff?!

@gggritso That sounds really good! I did once draw on his white tank top because I got bored; he still has it! I think it would be an awesome gift now, too :]

gggritso's avatar

@Chongalicious Sweet. Make sure to use something that won’t wash off easily.

Step 1: Use two, at most three colours, one of the colours has to be red
Step 2: Make sure whatever you draw sprawls around the stitches on the sides onto the back at least in one spot
Step 3: Make sure there is a small graphic element under the neck on the back of the shirt.
Step 4: Give
Step 5: You win “Valentine’s Day”

Chongalicious's avatar

@gggritso Thanks so much! I’m thinking of drawing an evil-looking Bomb-bomb (like in Super Mario Bro’s) Ooohhh I’m gonna want to keep it almost!! Lol

Why people of all ages are into buying gifts for Valentines Day I have no idea. Especially serious gifts that raise such thoughts as “will he like this?” “Will he like that?” Screw gifts for Valentines. It is not that serious a day. Buy him a card. Write nice things on it. Buy him the kind of snack that he likes. It IS NOT chocolate, if you are buying for a guy. Yeah, there are a few, a very few kinds of chocolate that I really like, but you wouldnt figure it out in a year.

Buy him a V-card when he is not expectling it, like a week ahead of time. Use your imagination. Get off of the Hallmark gerbil wheel…..and ditch all the crazy shit that women think about Valentines Day. Guys DO NOT give a damn about it. It’s no biggy.

It is to women, so today, while in Walgreens I bought my S/O a Valentines card, wrote on it and gave it to her when I got back to the car. She was thrilled that I was thinking about her. Will she get a gift? Yeah. Chocolate. Probably Godiva chocolate covered strawberries.

Give it a friggin rest, honey.

plethora's avatar

@Trillian Yes, how about a really yummy chocolate dessert….that he will hate.

plethora's avatar

@gggritso Do you have any idea whether any MAN on earth would like that? Highly unlikely

Chongalicious's avatar

@plethora Well I know he doesn’t expect anything fancy.. (he actually loves chocolate!) The card I would’ve chosen for him would be something hilarious from Spencer Gifts. The whole surprise thing sounds pretty awesome :) Actually this day isn’t that big to me either really…

I’m gonna take a guess at your chocolate of choice just for fun based on the Godiva thing: do you like Ferrero chocolate?? Nummy! Haha But thanks for the insight.

plethora's avatar

@Chongalicious I don’t know Ferrero chocolate. But I do like Godiva dark chocolate, usually the plainer versions. and especially dark chocolate covered strawberries. They are expensive, but just two would be great. Send them to me and I’ll be your boyfriend..:)

gggritso's avatar

@plethora Holy %$&#, aren’t you an angry one. Not to crap over your opinions, but it’s nice to be nice and I’d fucking love a custom t-shirt.

Chongalicious's avatar

@plethora LOL! I’ll pass :P But Ferrero Rochet is so freaking good! You must try it. I suggested it because I’ve noticed that girls like chocolate more but guys like more expensive chocolates! Cowinky-dink? I think not.

plethora's avatar

@gggritso The conversation on here is way too tame for me, so when I drop in I like to stir it up a bit. You are certainly entitled to your custom t-shirt. But notice the key word here, “custom”. You may love it. He may hate it, and then he’s stuck with wearing the damn thing just to keep her happy.

But thanks for the response. Love to get things going….:)

Chongalicious's avatar

@plethora hey now not all of us ladies would make someone wear a shirt to make us happy! If he didn’t like it. I’d wear it ;)

Have you ever made your own chocolate-covered strawberries? That seems like it would be a very romantic and sweet dessert, especially if he loves chocolate! Pick out the best, lushest strawberries you can find. Melt good chocolate on the stovetop (you should put the chocolate in a small metal bowl that goes inside a pan of boiling water, so the boiling water melts the chocolate). Then dip each strawberry in the chocolate, arrange on a platter, and leave in the fridge to cool for a few hours till the chocolate hardens. That’s a gift anyone could love! Also, if you’re looking for a romantic movie for people who love food, you might want to check out the Mexican film from the 90’s called Like Water for Chocolate.

Chongalicious's avatar

@Chongalicious Oh my God! I didn’t know anyone outside of my Spanish class knew of that movie!! (We watched the Spanish version Como Agua Para Chocolate, though.) My friends and I gave each other character names from it (I’m Chencha!!!) Haha but the dessert sounds nice, thank you!
