Looking for title of old PC game.

Asked by 88_Jenn (193points) February 5th, 2010

During a conversation about old video games a friend of mine mentioned one that she had always secretly liked. She could not remember the name of it and since I had never heard/played anything like it, I thought someone here may be able to help. I would like to surprise her with it for her birthday should I be able to find it!

She said she used to play it while babysitting, which would make it about 5–10 years old. She said it started with an E. We were talking about the Oregon Trail when she remembered it. She said it was some sort of explorer game where you have a small area of the screen that you explore and as you gain experience more of the screen lights up and you can start to explore more areas and do more tasks.

That is all the information that I have. Any ideas?

Was there fighting involved, or just exploring?

Were the areas “unlocked” or could you just survive more things so you could go different places? Side scrolling? Did you enter levels? lol…. sorry a little more information would be helpful.. there were a lot of games with maps and exploring back then… still are.

Yukon Trail followed Amazon Trail, and was about the Gold Rush in Alaska
Amazon Trail
Number Munchers, Word Munchers
Logical Journey of the Zoombinis

There was also a game that was part of the online Encyclopedia Britannica where you moved through a dungeon and answered questions.

@odali – I know… I sincerely apologize for the lack of info. I think it was just exploring. No levels. She mentioned mining as one of the tasks you could do in a certain area. I want to say it was a one word title, but like I said, she wasn’t sure. She said the screen was all black and as you completed tasks your little area would increase. Sounded like a land area, maybe?

I didnt mean to come off as mean just reread it and it kind of seemed like that sorry.. any idea what the tasks were?

@odali – I know she said mining was one but that is all I can remember. She said you could go to your little area and get better at a certain task…. . . ..

My guess is that it’s probably an adventure game. Did she mention what sort of “tasks” were involved? ie did she have to kill critters or find stuff?

Wow! That’s “Voyages of Discovery”! I had it on the Amiga and adored it, one of my favourite games of all time! Unfortunately the floppy got worn out after several years of playing…
