What would war be like between two "First World" countries?

Asked by RocketSquid (3483points) April 2nd, 2010

After reading this question, it got me thinking about what a modern day war between two first world countries, like Britain and Germany or the US and France or something.
Would it be precision strikes against military bases only, or would there be invasion of civilian population centers too? What about embargos and blockades? With the technology of both sides, along with the shared view by both sides of keeping the civilian populace out of harm’s way, what would fighting actually be like, and where would it take place?

It would be a world war all over again.

It would be a “cold war.”

The thing about fighting an all out war is that you cannot avoid civilians targets. You’re going to have to hit the ports. The various organs of government. The broadcast media centers. Eventually, invasion would have to happen. All out occupation would have to happen. There will also be precision strikes.

Of course, that is all dependent upon the why/where/what/how/when/who of the war. Is it fighting over resources in a far away land? Or is one country trying to invade the other? Also, don’t forget about nuclear weapons (both strategic and tactical). This war would be one between nuclear powers.

U.S. and China. World War III. Nuclear War.
Communist VS. (what exactly is the U.S.?)

Internet outages, strange diseases, miniature reconnaissance planes the size of butterflies, initial resistance of either party to be obviously aggressive, and the eventual bombing of bunker sites, military sites, armory sites. Bridges would go down too, but most likely in false flag operations committed by the holders of the bridges. Lots of Patriot Act crap, and no more internet freedom, unless you have a satellite connection to bypass it.

It would go one of two ways.

It would either be completely devastating, or it would stagnate into a technology-based, struggle with little physical engagement.

Horrendous and ultimately futile.

Yeah, like two superpowers are going to go at it with bombs and bullets anymore. They’d aim at each other’s wallets and propagandize each other’s populations, while using proxy armies to fight proxy wars in far off places to show off without spending too much.

Oh wait, that already what’s happening. .
