Have you taken seroquel then gone off it? Were there any side effects?

Asked by SuperMouse (30845points) May 5th, 2010

I recently cut my dose of Seroquel in half then slowly weaned myself off. I was on an incredibly small dose to begin with and for the most part it has been pretty easy transition. The only strange thing is that I seem to be having lots of bad dreams. Nightmares have always been rare for me – like monthly or less, but now it seems I am having them almost every night. Has anyone had experience with this?

I haven’t personally had experience with it, but when I worked in the psych hospital it was an extremely common complaint for just about any change in medication.

It also depends on how long you were on it, and for what. If you were on it for anxiety and you took it for some time, sounds silly, but your brain has very likely gotten used to not being stressed and then all of a sudden the chemical that staved it off is cut in half. That’s how I heard it explained by the psychiatrists at my old job.

Did you talk to the doc before cutting the dose in half? Even at a low dose, maybe it was too much of a cut too fast?

I’m not sure about Seroquel specifically, but I know that nightmares are often associated with withdrawing from psychiatric medications. Changing how much you take is definitely something you should discuss with your doctor.

The Seroquel could have been holding the nightmares in check. I would talk to your doctor about this as there are other meds that can help. I took Seroquel for three years and didn’t have any withdrawl symptoms besides some slight gastrointestinal upset, ymmv.

I took a low dose of Prozac for 48 hours and had 5–6 nightmares for both nights.

@gailcalled: Interesting. Your brain must not like Prozac, unless you took that instead of a different medication that you’d been on? That typically happens in an abrupt change in meds or decrease, not just starting.

@poofandmook: Prozac was behind door # 1. I tried several more and ended up on a low dose of Zoloft.
