How different is cost engineering in North America?

Asked by bardophile (7points) May 7th, 2010

Does the practice of cost engineering in the US and Canada differ significantly from the way it’s done in Europe, Asia, or the Middle East? As in, how different would the work be if one were a cost engineer in the US vs the UAE? Would someone with experience in the UAE and Pakistan be totally at sea in the US setting?

Cost engineering? I’m not sure about this one…. but accounting practices are different. Asset management and liability listings are different because there are accepted practices in the US that just aren’t allowed in other places, especially for listed companies.

What industry are you talking about? Oil and Gas? I think there are universals in certain industries that make the work pretty much the same globally. There are always going to be differences as far as regulatory work and supply chains, but the main difference would be probably language. Terms and general language skills would probably be the biggest hurtle.
