I have gotten my first C in my undergraduate career, how does this affect me? Law school, careers, employment.

Asked by AZByzantium (206points) May 7th, 2010

I know that sounds anal, but I am very upset. I am a good student and until now have maintained a 3.8–4.0 GPA. My hope is to one day get into an ivy league law/graduate school. Have any of you gotten a C and still done this? I have extensive extra curricular activities, does that help? I am so upset I feel sick.

It won’t affect you at all. Usually an A student getting a C means that they have finally been asked to actually learn something new. Law school will look at your LSATs. Don’t sweat it. Once you get your first job, no one ever asks you your GPA again. After that, it’s work accomplishments that matter.

In the workplace, a high GPA doesn’t mean you can think. It means your can perform to set expectations. Problem is, in the real world, the expectations aren’t always spelled out.

Don’t sweat it. I was like a 3.95— nothing but A’s and A minuses and I got a B+ in my last semester of college which pushed me to a 3.85. I was so convinced I sat with the summa group rather than the magna group at early commencement because I didn’t get that last grade. The irony was that it was a very enjoyable class and I really liked the professor and I was really surprised. But in the scheme of things it’s all relative and there’s more to the picture in recruiter’s eyes. Here’s an interesting quip I heard.
What do they call the guy who graduated top of his class of physicians in med school and the guy at the bottom?
Doctor

Not to worry. Don’t upset yourself. If I were deciding on a student to let into a school, one poor grade would not be the decider. However, maintaining a sense of humor about the ridiculousness of the whole thing would be.

One C should not be an issue. Can you identify the reasons you didn’t get the grade you wanted?

I am like you. I got a C and re-took the course during the summer to bring it up to an A.
Just consider that you can re-take a course as an option if you find it is an issue.

I don’t think it will be an issue, but I would recommend looking at the requirements for the schools you are interested in attending for law school to see what they are. Some schools are pretty strict about what your GPA has to be in order to be eligible, but the may also have waivers, so I would look into that as well.

Remember the “A” in GPA.

Really? I get C’s all the time, & my GPA is around 4.5…. It shouldn’t affect you much!

Sarcasm's avatar

@Draconess25 I do not think GPA means what you think it means.
If your GPA is 4.5, that would mean you are getting all A’s in your classes, including some AP classes.
A report card entirely comprised of Cs would be a 2.0.

@Sarcasm I guess it also depends on the scale. Ours went up to 6.5., so yeah. Then again, everything about my town is screwed up, & the schools are no exception.

If you had close to a 4.0 before the C it shouldn’t hurt you. But, if you are planning to go to law school, keep your GPA high; it’s very competitive.

SeventhSense's avatar

4.5’s or 6.5’s? I never heard of any GPA beyond 4.0.

Draconess25's avatar

@SeventhSense Some schools go up to 11.0. But mine isn’t that crazy.

That’s just silly. If it’s not broke don’t fix it. A to F was always fine…..It’s like clothing sizes. Size 1 used to be sufficient as the smallest size in clothing for women and then they had to introduce the “0”. Zero?” WTF? Do these women exist in antimatter or negative space?

Draconess25's avatar

@SeventhSense I wear a 0 & I’m very much real. Actually, a 0 is too big sometimes.

SeventhSense's avatar

I still say in the real world you should be a 1.

Draconess25's avatar

@SeventhSense It also depends on the pants,but I usually wear a 0 to a 3. For skinny jeans, I wear a 0. For cargoes, I wer a 4.

^missing my point

Zero doesn’t exist as a quantifiable indicator of any real world measurement except as an addition to another number.
“Bob cut me off a zero length of board”
“Can I have zero ounces of coke please?”
The old sizes were fine but they needed to change them because women wanted to be a size smaller to convince themselves they were more slender and youthful.
Likewise with the grading system. It was fine the way it was.
Capice?

Draconess25's avatar

@SeventhSense Hey, I don’t control the grading system. In our school district, a 73% is a D instead of a C.
