Immune to alcohol?

Asked by vampmoore (445points) May 22nd, 2010

Im a casual drinker (you wont find me at a bar every other day). But I’ve noticed that when I do drink, I drink heavily and do not get drunk. I do not really want to get drunk, but I find myself curious as to why I cant. Anyone know why not?

You say that you sometimes drink heavily. What do you mean by heavily?

What types of drinks are you consuming? How tall are you & how much do you weigh. All those questions are crucial in finding the answer to the question.

i mean that i drink non stop from the time i start drinking. i.e. if i arrive at i party at 9am and dont leave til 1, i am drinking for 4 hours. if my cup is empty i fill it back up. and i dont like mixed drinks or white liquor so i mostly drink rum or whisky. i am 5’7 160 pounds. im a female

Do you eat anything while drinking? Snacks of any kind? Do you move around a lot & keep active while drinking? Also.. I surely hope you mean 9PM & not the AM, otherwise I think you should seek help. The only reason to drink at 9AM is if family is visiting. :)

lol yes! i mean 9 PM not am. i dont usually snack, no. but i do move around alot. i like dancing and socializing and i feel weird if i sit down.

There is the answer. You keep active. A lot of people will just sit & lay about with friends while drinking. You won’t think you are drunk, but the second you stand up, the whole world flips you right on your ass. I would say, yes you do get drunk, but you may not feel the effects of it as much as someone who was sitting the entire time. I wouldn’t say you are immune, you just know how to handle your liquor & keep moving to sweat it off.

That answers the question as to how heavily you’re drinking. Heavy! I would say that you get drunk, but you don’t feel the effects like other people. By being drunk, I mean legally you would not be able to drive.

i would never drive even after one drink because im constantly asking myself—“i wonder if im drunk” i agree with rpmp that i just dont feel it like other people do.

No one is immune to alcohol, but some have a higher tollerence. Don’t kid yourself about this.

As I’ve already agreed….

It appears that you have developed tolerance as a result of consuming a high quantity of alcohol over a long period of time. Another possibility is that you’re intoxicated but don’t realize it.

vampmoore's avatar

I haven’t been consuming it for a long period actually. just over a year. So the latter is probably more correct.

That would not be surprising, vampmoore. People generally have a difficult time gauging their degree of sobriety-intoxication. Research demonstrates that this is is true even after they have been taught to do so.

Well, if you are like me and pee every 10 min then your system processes the alcohol vary quickly and you are on your way. Not really fun being drunk because it doesn’t last long and you pee all the time.

This just means that your system is very healthy and treats alcohol like a disease. It won’t waist any time in getting rid of it. I once consumed at whole bottle of conac worth $150 in 4 hours with little to no effect. 1 hour later I had no sign of being drunk. What a waist but it’s good to know that my body can fight off such things.

I had this happen to me recently after years of having a “normal to low” tolerance, I went out a couple of times within a week period and literally would drink 8+ drinks (I’m a 98 lb girl…) and have NO physical reaction at all. I know when I’m drunk and when I’m not. I was asked to be the DD as an illustration of how sober I was. The point is…there are instances in which you’re not drunk after drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and it’s not because you’re “drunk but don’t know it”. You would feel something if you were intoxicated-even just subtle changes. I went to the DR afterwards and think it was that my adrenals were at a very high stress level and releasing insane amounts of adrenaline into my body at the time. On top of that, alcohol increases adrenaline release even more. Enough adrenaline pumping through your body counteracts the physical effects of alcohol (apparently) so an imbalance may be the issue. After I was treated for the adrenal weakness with some natural supplements and by taking better care of myself, my tolerance went right back to the low end. That being the case, I would suggest you ask your doctor to check your adrenals at your next check up. It’s cool to be immune to alcohol sometimes, but the longer term effect is not worth it. It may be something else that’s natural for you, but it’s better to be safe and check it out. :)
