How do I copy all my email from Outlook Express (Windows XP) to Windows Live Mail (Windows 7)?

Asked by HungryGuy (16039points) May 29th, 2010

I just bought a new PC and am setting it up now. Outlook on my old machine has an export function in the menu, but Live Mail (the email client, not the webmail service) doesn’t seem to have an import function. I’d like to not lose all my old email. Is there a way?

@HungryGuy I am also eagerly waiting to see what responses you get because I am having the same predicament!

I think the only way you can move Outlook mail is forward each e-mail one by one. I too hope someone comes up with a simpler solution.

Dude, switch to gmail.

I’m thinking of switching to anything besides a Microsoft product so this doesn’t happen again, and I can just install the same email client again and again and again and copy my email file with each new PC.

Well hey, everybody! I just discovered a utility that came with Win7 called Windows Easy Transfer. It says it can transfer email from my old PC to my new PC by installing a component of WET onto my old PC. Did Microsoft really anticipate this problem and provide a solution with Win7? Stay tuned! I’ll let y’all know…

Nope. It only copies files over the network. It doesn’t convert Outlook mail and import into live mail.

I haven’t tried it yet. Probably next weekend. But I thought I’d post it for those of you with the same problem…

@HungryGuy thanks for the update. I just browsed through the posted site and it looks like it will be helpful. I should know by the end of this week if its useful for my situation.

@AmWiser – I’ll also be trying it this weekend on my old XP machine. Let’s compare notes afterward…

@HungryGuy definitely. Good luck…because I know I’m going to need it.

W00t! I just did it, and it worked. I have all my old email from Outlook in Windows 7! It’s not organized very well—it’s all in Imported Folders, but I got it all! I’m not going to lose all my old email!

The process is really complex, tho! Let me know how it works out for you…
