Fluther says it will be "down for a bit" starting around 10:15 PM PST "Down for a bit" is a charming, colloquial construction, but wouldn't you rather have an actual time frame?

Asked by lillycoyote (24865points) June 9th, 2010

Down for 15 minutes? A half-hour? Down for an hour? Down for two hours? Five hours? They may not know exactly but maybe a rough estimate?

Probably they don’t really know – my husband is a computer guru, and he says it is just like any other endeavor – it might be a few minutes or a few hours – depending.

@YARNLADY I’d just rather they say that, I’d rather they say “We really don’t know how long this will take”. But they have to be able to estimate that it will take sometime between a minute and the rest of our lives.”. “A bit” is just so vague. Not that it wouldn’t do me some good to have this place unavailable for a time. :)

And those Fluther moderators are always getting after us for being “too vague and unspecific” with our questions!! Look who’s talking! Sheesh!! Lol.

lillycoyote's avatar

Exactly @MRSHINYSHOES, look who’s talking! Who’s being too “vague and unspecific” this time?

YARNLADY's avatar

Yes, I would rather a more specific warning.

The only way to be pretty sure of how long it will take is to horrendously overestimate (and personally I think that’s a little lame). We’ll keep it as short as possible but if complications arise obviously it will take longer. Read a book, watch this awesome TED talk, go look at the stars or just catch up on some sleep. More than 15 minutes and less than two hours would be a bet I’d take for what it’s worth.

@timtrueman Thank you. I will most certainly use the time, no matter how long or how short, to practice those skills I once had, the skills that made me capable of not just functioning, but flourishing, before the advent of sites such as Fluther. :) I’m just kind of a bottom line person. “A bit” is just a little to vague for, not that I can’t be vague and mysterious myself, when I want to be. Or maybe I’ll just play Plant vs. Zombies and then go to bed, where I actually should be now, as a matter of fact.

timtrueman's avatar

@lillycoyote how far are you in PvZ? I’m still only just a few levels past the swimming pool.

Dog's avatar

So it happened :) Did you all notice the awesome change?

lillycoyote's avatar

@timtrueman I actually asked a question here, regarding my addiction to Plants vs. Zombies. I wrote this all down so I would get it right. I’ve finished all the Adventure levels. And the final battle? It’s harrowing! It’s Armageddon! I’ve done 16 of 20 mini games, 7 of 18 of the puzzles and 3 of 10 of the Survival levels. I have my Zen Garden, with house for the regular plants, the mushrooms and one for the aquatic plants. And I am working my way through the Adventure levels again, at 4 of 8. When you work through the Adventure levels the second time “Crazy Dave” picks the first three plants for you, which you are stuck with, but it makes it kind of challenging all over again, because you have to work with what they give you. God! I really need to get a life, don’t I?

lillycoyote's avatar

@Dog I haven’t noticed any changes, awesome or otherwise. But Fluther was only down for a bit so I stand corrected! :)

Dog's avatar

Hmmmm look on this question… :) Now do you see it?

lillycoyote's avatar

@Dog “Response moderated” vs ”Removed by Fluther moderators?” That’s going to take a lot of the fun out of people’s own Removed… comments. But it’s cleaner, and the user name is not there, so no one will be thinking “Wow, what the hell could so and so have said to have it removed by the moderators,” even though it could have been removed just for being off topic.

Dog's avatar

Interesting no?

I like the idea behind it. I know they are also planning to add reasons for the removal in the future as well.
That will be nice.

So, is the ‘bit’ over now? It’s 11:52 PDT. I’m surprised someone is still observing PST.

YARNLADY's avatar

Let’s see, we sprang ahead in the Spring, and so I guess that PST would mean an hour behind the rest of the State of California, so what is it, really?

zenele's avatar

Don’t freak, dear, I’ll be on messenger if necessary.

zenele's avatar

@timtrueman That was amazing – thanks!

@timtrueman So one of the changes is that you can’t see what you have written (as it will appear after hitting answer)? I kind of liked that feature.

Dog's avatar

Preview is not working?
It is working for me- is anyone else having this issue? I use Firefox what are you using @chyna?

chyna's avatar

Um, I’m computer illiterate. I have no idea what I’m using. If you give me choices, I could figure it out. I’m still not getting preview.

Dog's avatar

I meant your internet browser.

Safari
Firefox
Chrome
Explorer

:D

chyna's avatar

Explorer. Hah, I recognized that one. So what do I need to do?

augustlan's avatar

@chyna Try clearing your cache (history/footprints) and restarting your browser. If that doesn’t work (and even if it does) I highly recommend you switch to Firefox. It’s free and beats Explorer by a mile! :)

chyna's avatar

I don’t do well with change, but I’ll try it. Reluctantly…

Dog's avatar

You will love it once you get used to it Chyna- It is light years better than IE!

chyna's avatar

If you guys don’t see me back here for a few days, it’s because firefox destroyed my mind.

zenele's avatar

Firefox destroyed my mind sounds like a great tech/horror movie title.

augustlan's avatar

@chyna I only recently switched. I’m damn near computer illiterate, and was reluctant to change, too. But… trust me. It’s worth it!
