Are Objective lenses standardized? [microscope]?

Asked by Beta_Orionis (3410points) June 19th, 2010

I’m looking to purchase a good personal optical microscope and currently in the process of drafting an inquiry to the life science departments of several local universities.

I need something with a minimum top magnification of 1000x, but I’m wondering whether I can swap a 100x oil immersion lens into a student scope to which I have access.

So…

Do objective lenses for optical scopes have standardized diameters/threads?

I have bought a number of used objectives on line, and have never had the problem of one not fitting, but that may have been luck.

It’s possible that they wouldn’t fit but things have changed since. A tip that I heard is to contact an industrial microscope manufacturer such as omek optics (link added) and ask if they could make you one that will fit exactly. According to my understanding that’s the best method.
