Has anyone ever lived in Indianapolis or spent a lot of time there?

Asked by Dr_Dredd (10540points) July 19th, 2010

What did you think of it? What sort of cultural life does the city have?

I saw an interesting job advertised in Indianapolis, but I have no idea what it would be like to live there.

Very interesting city. Good restaurants, museums, nightlife, nice architecture and pro sports teams as wells as the famed Indy 500 and Brickyard 400.. Home prices are decent. The suburbs are quite nice. You’d be relativity close to Chicago and Cincinnati. Good schools are plentiful. The only thing I don’t like about Indy is that it doesn’t have a big body of water.

I have never lived there but it was part of my sales territory until recently and spent much time there. Oh, they have a good airport, too.

@Sueanne_Tremendous Thanks. I definitely liked the airport… I was stranded there on my way back to NY. :-)

I dont really like it. I’m not into car racing…....there is a big crime underbelly.

But the burbs are okay. i’d rather race horses.

I got stranded there on 9/11 when we were forced to land while other planes were being flown into buildings and I have never met more gracious people than those of that city who opened their homes to me and my family that day. I have been there a lot on business and overall think it is a great city and has most of what I have come to love about where I live. Loving racing would be a big plus for you going there!

I haven’t lived there since I was 4, but grew up in Indiana and went to Indianapolis regularly to visit relatives or just have fun. It’s like a lot of other big cities, with nicer areas and not-so-nice areas. The winters aren’t as extreme as in other places, but you’d still have a decent amount of snow to look forward to.

The museums and restaurants are great, and there’s no lack of shopping. We used to go to Union Station, which was an old train station that was converted into a shopping center. I guess they’ve closed it down which was sad, because it was one of the stops my grandfather made when he was a train conductor and opened a new mall in the same area. Anyway, the Children’s Museum is absolutely amazing even for adults. We took our kids last time we were in Indy, and I think my husband and I had more fun than they did.

While it isn’t that far to other cities like Chicago, there isn’t a whole lot else around. You drive through a lot of flat corn and soybean fields to get anywhere. If you’re up for a road trip, you can visit Brown County in southern Indiana. I don’t think Mammoth Caves is too far off either.

do NOOOOOOT live anywhere near the racetrack. That whole area during Nascar time is a complete and utter dump. Horrible, horrible, horrible.

And if they ever get F1 racing back, it’s not so much of a dump around there, but it’s packed to the gills.

yes, the extra Os were necessary to convey how important NOT is in the sentence ;)

I’m not tremendously into racing, so that might be a problem. Hmm. Perhaps I’ll pass on interviewing for this job…

@Dr_Dredd: It all depends on your and the job’s proximity to the track. Don’t pass up on a good job just because of that… there are plenty of places to live that aren’t near the track. Unless the job is near the track… in which case, it’s only really crappy during BIG races. Nascar, Indy 500… they stopped doing F1 there a few years ago, which knocks out one biggie.
