Is Fluther renting space [or some arrangement] on its servers for Q and A sections of new partner sites and is Fluther providing the engine for those sites' Q and A?

Asked by anartist (14808points) July 27th, 2010

I’ve heard mention of “Federated Fluther” and that FF Qs are labeled as such. I have never seen one. Will they get their own category? How does it work? Are [say] Sierra Club’s Qs asked on their site but also post here and our answers post there? Do only beta testers see their Qs? How exactly is a Fluther partner a partner?

Currently, only beta testers have access to Federated questions. Federated has its own tab, just like General, Social, and Meta. Each Federated question shows not only who asked it, but from what site, too. They are asked via the partner site, and show up there and here. We answer them here, and our answers show up on both sites, too. The rest I’ll have to leave up to Bendrew to answer, because I don’t know all of the particulars.

If you’re not in the beta group, you’re not affected at all.

@andrew but we are affected, even if we’re not in the beta group. One of the Sierra Club’s questions
http://www.sierraclubgreenhome.com/fluther/index.php/90064/is-it-safe-to-water-vegetables-with-water-that-has-a/
has an answer from me in it. I had no idea when I wrote my answer, that it was going to appear on some website that wasn’t Fluther, that I have never heard of, and would never have heard of at all without someone mentioning it in another question.

I think there needs to be:
1) A way of opting out of cross-posting, for your own question
2) An indication of where a question is cross-posted, available before a user chooses to respond to it.

This question looks like it was asked on Fluther but accidentally ended up on the Sierra club feed. Probably just a bug that was helpful to point out.

That is very interesting since I thought only a certain category of questions were shared on both sites. Thanks for the info.

Bendrewim check it out?

@fireside it might have got put in the feed because the Sierra Club was mentioned?

@downtide – I didn’t see Sierra Club mentioned in “the Fluther thread’:http://www.fluther.com/90064/is-it-safe-to-water-vegetables-with-water-that-has-a/ but there may be other data triggers that got the wires crossed. Guess that is why this feature is still in Beta : )

@fireside Questions asked by beta users on Fluther get syndicated across the federated network. We’re working on making this more clear.
