Is it technically illegal to NOT inform the cable company they didn't disconnect?

Asked by Necromancer (4points) August 1st, 2010

I moved into a rental and the cable was connected, i assume the company forgot to disconnect and I am getting free cable. I am going to just leave it but I’m curious technically from a legal standpoint do I have to inform the cable company? Shoulden’t it be their responsibility to look out for their lines?

The previous tenant may not have stopped their account yet.

If you watch cable and don’t tell them then yes.

Even if you don’t want it. yes.

They can very likely catch you since they know the signal is going to your apartment, and they were not notified by the previous tenant.

I would watch it until it is disconnected. I don’t believe they have any idea whether you are watching or not. Just please stupidity if they ask about it.

I don’t know about the legality of it but it is unethical to take the service without paying for it. That being said, “Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself ?” Enjoy it while it lasts.

Yes. If you have cable service in your home that you are not paying for it is considered theft of services.

Here’s a bit more on the issue. Your circumstance is apparently considered “passive theft.”

Wait for the next cable bill to arrive. sooner or later, someone is going to have to pay for your “free cable”.

I would notify the cable company and maybe they will let the outstanding bill be written off, since you were an honest citizen to tell them.

Since you have to knowingly connect the cable to your television set, I would say that it becomes a legal issue. It would be different if you truly had no knowledge of the cable service being provided.

Just watch it when me and my dad moved in to our apartment four years ago the previouse tenants cable never stopped and nothing happened we there just barley realized it a few month ago and just stopped it with no harm done.
