If you brush too often, or too hard, you can wear down your enamel, which can lead to tooth decay.

Yup. Tooth enamel may be hard, but it won’t last for long if you scrub your teeth like scouring a pan with steel wool. Three minutes twice a day is enough, or you’ll wear down your enamel and risk all kind of unpleasant dental conditions.

I’d say more than 3 times a day is too much. I have also heard you aren’t supposed to brush right after you finish eating. So if you eat three times a day, and brush an hour or so after each meal, I think you’re good.

I agree with the above responses, but did you know that flossing can also be detrimental? The last time I went to my dentist, she told me that if you floss more than twice or so a day and do it emphatically, it can lead to scarring on your gums. So, be careful with that….

just as a note if you leave 2 hrs between eating any food with sugar in your teeth can repair any damage caused, coupled with brushing for 3 minutes twice a day you should *never need a filling….24 white teeth and no fillings and I go to the dentist every 6 months…touch wood ;)

also I’m english so scrap that mis-conception I see all to often on family guy lol

Yes you can abuse your enamel and gums. the dentist told me to get J&J Stim-u-Dent sticks to remove food durning the day. Use them gently.

I brush for about a minute or two at least twice a day with no flossing. Listerine maybe twice a week. My dentist seems impressed by my clean teeth every checkup.

I have never heard of brushing one’s teeth too often. Dentists say to brush after every meal. But if you are brushing too hard, your gumline will actually recede and if it gets bad enough, you may need a gum graft.
