What is Hydroquinone?

Asked by MrsDufresne (3554points) August 18th, 2010

I know that it is a skin lightening agent, but what is it from? Why is it considered dangerous by some?

I’m getting a mild orgo chem flashback and something about aromatics…methinks it’s an organic substance ( I remember its drawing now, it’s got a cool ring with an OH on each side…man, that’s crazy!)...I didn’t know it was used in skin lightening but I’m thinking, like any chemical, it’s probably causing cancer (what isn’t these days).

It has been shown to cause luekemia in lab rats. It is one of the reagents bombardier beetles use to defend themselves.

Hum. I use it as prescribed by a doctor. I’m thinking I have some research to do…
@WestRiverrat Do you have any links for the leukemia claims?
