Depends on what you’re looking for, my experience with them is limited in range but I used to spend a lot of time in the DeviantART rooms, which are mainly art based but there are some general ones too. You can also find a lot of tech ones which are more of discussing certain tech related things (mainly software) on networks like the Freenode network (but these IRC chat rooms so you need an IRC client to access them). Last but not least there’s the Fluther chat rooms here which can be found clicking the chat link above.

for me there is only one way to go, thats IRC. i would suggest you download mIRC an IRC client, and lean a little how it works (it can be tricky). but, if you lean how to use it, you will have access to thousands of chat networks, each hosting loads of rooms with thousands of people.
